I'm thinking about picking up these cast recordings (EFX & Metropolis). Does anyone have them? If so, what do you think? I have Breakfast at Tiffany's, really enjoy it, and wonder if anyone else likes the recording. I love "I've Got a Penny" - great song.
EFX is a weird record, but it has some decent songs on it. For some reason, I like the uber-cheesy "Intergalactic Circus of Wonders" song.

EFX is a great album for a Las Vegas show. It is a little strange compared to traditional broadway shows but then again it isn't a traditional broadway show. I enjoyed EFX with Michael Crawford very much. My favorite tracks are the EFX title song and "Magic that's around You (Merlin Sequence). It is a great show for one actor playing a multitude of parts.
EFX is my favorit Las Vegas show. It ran for 8 years and there are 3 different sountracks. Which verison are we talking about? "Magic That's Around You," "Let It Shine," and the title song along with "River In Time" are the best songs. I'm still pissed there was never a soundtrack to the Rick Springfield verision.
I saw it with David Cassidy. I loved it when it was here! Is there a David Cassidy recording? I didn't even know they made one in the first place!
There is a David Cassidy recording that was sold only at the hotel. It os on ebay often and usually sells at between $25-$60 It's the best or second best version of the show.
Thanks, I'll see if there's any floating around.

I saw it with Tommy Tune! Lol, and I have the cd too.

Tommy's cd is good but I was upset with him for cutting the original title song and "Magic That's Around You" because he can't sing that high I think.

Well from what I know of the show, they rewrite it to fit each lead...
But I don't have any guesses!

That's correct. The show was completely different for each star. The only that was the same was the set and some of the songs. The story always changed when a new replacement came in too. That would never happen on Broadway.

Exactly! But, being both a director and a long-time illusionist/special effect designer - that show is heaven in many ways!
I wonder which shows on B'way would have changed the most if they were rewritten for each new lead...

The most revision I can think of is Toni Braxtons new song
I have the CD with David Cassidy...it's alright. I loved it when I saw it, but I was so young, I don't remember much.

Metropolis comes out of the London mega-musical pop-opera phase from the late 80's-90's. It has 2 saving graces: Judy Kuhn in the leading role and a couple good songs. Judy sings the crap out the role, but is not given enough star material. She gets a killer duet with the leading man and leads a gospel number called "You Are the Light". If you're a Judy fan, by all means get it otherwise, I'd rather listen to her in the CHESS OBC album.
I have to agree with JB Singer. Metropolis can be abit of a chore to sit through. But it is worth getting if only for the marvellous Judy Kuhn who I think was nominated for the Olivier award that year.
The big duet (It's Only Love/Bring On the Night) is fabulous and remains one of my top 5 love songs. Unfortunately for every sensational song, you have to sit through a monotonous dirge (101.11), a weird twiddley bit (Futura's Theme) or an Emperor-Ming-from-Masters-of-the-Universe type pronouncement (every word from campy Brian Blessed including evil cackle).
Still, DESPITE that, Judy Kuhn is a class act and it's a CD worth adding to your collection.

Has EFX closed ?>>
It closed in, I think, December of 2002. I know for sure that it has been closed for some time. Amazon has a few of the original cast recordings. I don't know whether or not the MGM Grand still has any of the CDs for sale.
I've only seen the M.C. recording on amazon.

not only has EFX closed ... even the showroom has been completely redone ... and is now housing KÁ, the new show by Cirque du Soleil ...
EFX has closed. The only cd that was ever avalable wide was the original cast with Michael Crawford. The other two you have find on ebay and MGM does not have anymore in the "back." I cleaned them out.
KA is a good step for MGM because it's a new age age there's technology to have an updated show even though I'm sure I will be sitting there saying, "they discontinued EFX for THIS?!?!"
I saw EFX with David Cassidy and while the stage effects were great (the whole show, really), there was nothing else memorable about it. The CD with Michael Crawford sounds more like an hour on a lite rock radio station than anything else.
I love the recording of Metropolis. It has several good numbers including You Are the Light, Hold Back the Night, It's Only Love/Bring on the Night, One of Those Nights, and The Sun. I fell in love with it the first time I heard it.
I heard the studio recording of Breakfast at Tiffany's and a recording of Holly Golightly and found them rather dull. I don't think I ever finished either one.
