I love Santo's honest responses here, and I love his designs (in general)!
I don't understand why the Tony committee won't honor another show in its place. I know this goes way back to past nominees who have either refused or have been disqualified from a nomination. But he's absolutely right. It denies an opportunity that (otherwise) would have been considered.
I'm glad the committee realizes the error of its ways, but why not add a nominee in its place?

What an honest and humble response. It must be an extremely awkward situation for him, and he seems to have handled it with honor and dignity.

Posted: 5/18/10 at 12:01amMy guess is that he was just as shocked as everyone else was when the nominations came out in the first place. My guess is that he would have been up front about it immediately afterwards if they had approached him for a comment.

Exactly. On one hand, you're shocked and excited to have gotten a Tony nomination (well, one more than expected). On the other, you know that it's sort of undeserved or unfair. What do you do? Respond the way he did.

And he doesn't make the eligibility rulings. He said he didn't think he was eligibile, and was surprised to find he was nominated. I imagine he figured they deemed him eligible after all.
His words on the matter and on his disappointment another designer couldn't be nominated it pure class.
