Easter and Broadway

Just a thought. It's Easter. Broadway, as far as I can tell, is predominately run by Christians and Jews. I have always thought it's interesting to see what shows reflecting religious beliefs appear on Broadway. There are the obvious.....Godspell, Fiddler On The Roof, Jesus Christ Superstar. What others? Religion has always intrigued me (yes, I have my own personal beliefs). I think it is a really neat avenue of exposing large groups of people to others beliefs. In a very entertaining fashion, which leads to exploration.

Honestly, I do have to agree with you. That show has always seemed a bit iffy, if you know what I mean.

I was not able to make it to town to see Amazing Grace....kind of figured that show could fit into a "religious" theme, but I don't know.

I'm not religious (and neither is my family), which may be why I don't see a problem with it.

I celebrate Jesus' life, death, resurrection and take him very seriously. I've been involved with productions of JCS, Godspell, and Joseph, reasonably enjoy Children of Eden; I see no difference in seeing JCS on Easter or any other day of the year. If it's appropriate to see on March 26, it's appropriate to see on March 27.

I agree with you too. I love the fact that the title alone will draw people to the theatre and let them research what they choose. I agree with you as beliefs go. I'm really interested to see where this thread goes. Like I originally said I think it is mostly Christians and Jews producing Broadway. Would be interesting to see if a Muslim show appeared or another religion. Just attempting to open a discussion...

Being that JCS is more concerned with the events leading up to the crucifixion, I find it most appropriate to listen to or see on Good Friday, or listen repeatedly during Holy Week. To me it's too somber to enjoy on the actual Resurrection Feast day. But it's still totally appropriate on Easter as well.

My go-to song to listen to on easter is "Happy Easter" from the Easter Parade soundtrack, as well as the title song.

The Mormons are having their beliefs exposed to large numbers of people, and I don't think that they're thrilled about it.

Hm when I saw Book of Mormon on tour in 2014 there were several ads for the church in the playbill which I thought was very strange. Something like "You've seen the show, now read the book!"

All productions of Mormon worldwide have had full-page ads from the LDS church in the playbills or programs for over a year now; maybe two.

When I saw the tour in Boston this last September, there were actual Mormon elders outside talking to people in line about the Church. They were super peaceful and polite. I can understand Mormons who are offended by the show, but I also think some of them are just happy about the exposure it brings to their religion.

BOM questions the concept of faith in general, despite its focus on Mormons. Does "ancient Jews sailing to America" sounds LESS believable than "God sent his only son to die for our sins"? Not really. For the record I'm Catholic.

I used to be surprised that Broadway didn't change its schedule around Easter like it does at Christmas. But then again, I went to church with my mom last night and the church was barely half full. If people are in town for Spring/Easter break, it seems that they will see shows on Easter weekend instead of religious stuff. Which is fine.

I think both of those statements are both unbelievable, but I suppose the former sounds at least slightly more believable.

I'm always impressed by the manner in which the Jews and the Catholics rationalize the ridicule of Mormon beliefs while, if the same were done to their beliefs, many of which on the surface are as ludicrous as those of the Mormon faith, they would take to the streets and throw rotten eggs at the cast members leaving the theater.
