Posted: 4/6/05 at 8:35pmI was there on understudy day so I saw her as Elpbab in Act II. She blew me away. I'm a hardcore Idina fan, but I loved Eden's performance too.

I made a point of seeing Eden while Idina was away shooting a movie or something (In June), and to be honest, I thought she was amazing. She added little "eden's" to the character, kinda like matt caplan does to his "mark", except "edens" are less annoying...
She was great and REALLY made a connection with the character. I don't enjoy her in brooklyn (although she and ramona are the saving grace of that show), because she screeches at times, but she sounded awesome in wicked. It really sounded almost like it was written to suit her talents.

Posted: 4/6/05 at 8:40pmI'm glad to hear that she was liked. I don't think I would like her in the role due to the nasality of her voice when she screams those high notes.

I've only heard audio of Eden Espinosa in Wicked, and I really enjoy her Defying Gravity, As Long As You're Mine, For Good, I'm Not That Girl, but I really am not a fan of her renditions of Wizard and I and No Good Deed. They must've been from off days or whatever but her No Good Deed was uninspired and lifeless and the Wizard and I was "belted" through her nose. But overall I like her Elphaba.
"I was there on understudy day so I saw her as Elphaba in Act II" Who else went on for that day? I've heard a Defying Gravity with Laura Bell and Idina and it said it was from an Understudy day.

Posted: 4/6/05 at 9:18pmUnderstudy day started out with LBB and Idina, but Idina was so sick after Defying Gravity that she left, and Eden went on...

Idina was CLEARLY sick.
"AH AH AH AH AH!!!" was more like "uhhh uhh uh uhhhhhhh"
But everyone gets sick now and then :)

Posted: 4/6/05 at 10:23pmEden Espinosa is one of the most amazing singers I have ever had the fortune of hearing. She is amazing in BKLYN and when she hits those notes my heart melts. I have heard full songs of her in wicked that were very clear and I was very impressed the way she balanced every note and ended it at the right time.

I too have heard a few clips of Eden and I was quite impressed with her vocals. I hope she returns to the role after the Green Bean leaves in a year. (Weren't the producers of Wicked trying to coax Eden out of her BKLYN contract so she could come back to the show to replace Idina? She was asked before Shoshana, I believe.)
And I happened to have loved Eden in BKLYN. The show is complete sh!t, but I loved her in it. She wasn't screechy when I saw the show back in December. She was dead-on and received a standing ovation at curtain call. Not that those really mean anything to Broadway audiences anymore.

Posted: 4/6/05 at 10:48pmYes, the Wicked producers DID try to get her out of her contract. She will be Elphaba again...

Posted: 4/6/05 at 11:06pmI'm sure that Eden is fantastic, but I can't see her as being better vocally for the part as Idina. The role was written around Idina, and is very specific where the top notes are, where the sustained notes are, etc. Idina's money note is a C, and all her big belty songs end on a note around there (No Good Deed, Defying Gravity, Wizard and I) and only got up to an F for a moment. But for Eden, her money note is an F, as shown in Brooklyn. I would imagine that if Elphaba was reworked to fit in Eden's specific gifts, it would work much better. But I'm sure she does fine without it.

If you want to get technical, the role was written around Stephanie Block.

Posted: 4/7/05 at 12:43amHonestly, it's good to see all of you are Eden fans because I absolutely HATED her as Elphaba. And I'm not the hugest fan of Idina Menzel, but I think compared to Eden, Idina rocked out. And Eden just was not up to par. But then again, I think Shoshana blows both of those women out of the water. Also, I saw Eden in Brooklyn and thought she sounded like she was singing right through her nasal cavity. It's just way too trumpet sounding for me.

I love Eden- I heard recording of her as Elphaba and thought she was amazing. I think she was more consistant than Idina who a lot of the times I heard her was pitchy and sounded really tired (but in her defense, singing that show 8 times a week, who wouldn't?)
Eden in Brooklyn- I saw it live just about a month ago, and she made me cry because she is doing this 8 times a week... And those notes she hits are being belted- I have never head anyone belt that high. But- yes ... the show is horrible.
Eden returning as Elphaba- I hear that if Brooklyn does not pick up business they can keep it alive until July... So maybe she will return to Wicked... I think Eden is a great singer, but I do gotta admit that her acting is trailing behind...

I never saw her as Elphaba, but I've heard recordings of her singing almost every song from Wicked (multiples of some ... I've heard two renditions of her singing No Good Deed and Defying Gravity). My first impression was that she's just not a belter. I think she does has a lovely voice (Once Upon a Time from Brooklyn ... the beginning was golden
). But I'm often left confused by her high notes. One Defying Gravity was excellent, when she got into her upper register the sounds were more full and rich, but on another recording she was just screaming. I thought her No Good Deed was extremely weak. So I suppose I found her to be just okay ... I'm still trying to figure out if I like Shoshana or Idina better

I've heard clips of her as well. Her Wizard and I is probably the best I've heard, but other than that, I didn't like her as much as Idina or Shoshana. She seemed incredibly nervous in some of the clips I've heard and her voice wasn't that strong. But I'm sure she could pull off Elphaba. However, she was amazing in Brooklyn, so maybe she'll be better. Shoshana is better than Idina and Eden combined.
I could totally see her replacing Shoshana next January since Brooklyn will probably close. If not Shoshana, she probably will be offered the tour once Stephanie leaves.

I think I'm the biggest Shoshana Bean Fan EVER and I have to say, that Eden does not come close to her AT ALL. I mean, Eden can't act, she can sing a little (well, scream) and honestly, I just don't think you can compare the two.
Go See Shoshana in Wicked and you'll see how flawless her performance is. Not only that, but if you watch her sing, her voice is place perfectly. She shows it in her wierd facial movements...it's kinda annoying at first, but then you realize that's how she makes such amazing sounds!
