Anyone know anything more about the run at the Shaw theatre this month? It starts on Tuesday and I am thinking about going because I love the music from the show.
Not only is the music for this show really stunning, the quality of writing in the book & lyrics is pure genius - Bill Russell is one of the most underrated librettists/lyricists in the business.
I would love to see this production at the Shaw but the only night I'll be in London in August is a Monday night on my way back from Edinburgh - and there is no Elegies performance on Mondays!

Great little show. I saw it in 92 and 93, first at the Kings Head and later at the Criterion. Amazing casts including Miquel Brown, Kim Criswell, Kwame Kwei-Armah, James Dreyfus, Simon Fanshawe, Don Gilet and drag queens Regina Fong and Lily Savage!
I already knew the music, which I think it excellent. However, the singers did the score no justice. There was no emotion. The female singers were particularly weak. Angels/Punks/Raging Queens and My Brother Lives in San Francisco have truly great lyrics, but they just weren't interpreted in the slightest. There was no Wow factor in the vocals at all, and no real expression. I REALLY liked the monologues, I thought the casting for them was spot on, and very well acted. I sort of think the show itself is a difficult one to get right, but these monologues would have worked better without the music, and the songs better without the monologues. They just didn't go together (or atleast they didn't seem to in this production). At the end of day though, it is for a good cause, and I wish them a successful run.
Shame this production doesn't seem to do the piece justice. I saw the RSAMD production at the Edinburgh Fringe a few years ago and it was stunning - one of the most moving nights I've ever spent in a theatre.

I took my Ex Wife to see this last week, and you will not be able to hold back the emotional rollercoaster, it brings a wonderful wholesome sense of the..... I find it difficult to describe, but you will leave a far far better person.............................
Booked tickets for the last show, very much looking forward to it, though it's sort of 'work' for me-it relates to the resaerch I'm doing for my PhD it's one I'm very much looking forward to, keep the reports coming those who are going in the meantime!
Maybe I'm on nobody's side

I went the same night as Mark, and also felt like the piece, while good, didn't quite come together. The pacing is incredibly snappy, but the production flies by so fast that you never really make an emotional connection with most of the characters (especially when you can sense a song coming by the jump in static over the speakers - the monologues are unmiked). Gave it three stars in my magazine, and guess that the show will get better as it runs as everyone settles in.
Also, Miquel Brown really needs a bra with her top. Just saying.
