re: re: re: Elia Kazan has passed away

Well, so much for my digression into Dirk Bogarde in The Night Porter.

Centuries, Namo, really? You think that the acting styles of the 1700's are that similar to those of today? The concept of director as we know it did not even exist then.

Perhaps "planted" was too early in my analogy. I was trying so hard to make sure that I was not giving the man total credit for how much theatre has evolved in the last 60 years. But he was a major player. Shall I try "cultivated?"

No, Queen (oh, how many times have I uttered that phrase in my life?!), I would doubt that the styles then and now were overly similar. But we were talking about the seeds of modern drama, which were certainly planted long before, for instance, Shakespeare's time.

I would say that the particular style that Kazan helped to bring to prominence probably starred with the the plays of Strindberg and Ibsen and, to a lesser degree, Chekhov.

I just went to the Actor's Studio tonight, I didn't know what to expect (besides a performance of Betrayal), whether or not they would be speaking about it in a sort of mock-memorial before the show. It pretty much went unspoken; his obituary was on the bulletin board, that was about it. Strange how hard it is to mourn the loss of a genius when it was wrapped up in such a dastard.
