The amazingly talented Julie Andrews had her on television show from 1972 - 1973. It was aimed at families, but it could never reach that audience since it aired so late when children were already asleep. In one episode, two of Julie's most well-known roles Eliza Doolittle and Mary Poppins met each other and did not get along. Both of them argued who had done more for Julie. They eventually stop their feud when they sing "Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious". But who do you think won the battle?

Posted: 1/15/13 at 10:39pmI honestly can't choose!!! I know Julie would forever remain in the popular conscience as Mary Poppins, but her Eliza is so absolutely brilliant. If the songs were to determine which role wins, I'd go with Eliza because nothing can't top her rendition of I could've danced all night. This is sooo hard!! it's like choosing between Roxie and Velma.

Posted: 1/16/13 at 12:25pmJulie was apparently being nice to Eliza when she said, "I was busy making Mary Poppins." Julie was not given the role because George Cukor and Jack Warner did not want an unknown in film to play the role. Walt Disney obviously took a risk by casting her as Mary Poppins and it paid off. He even thought about delaying 'Mary Poppins', so Julie could film 'My Fair Lady'.

That was a GREAT variety show! Whatever the reason for its commercial failure, I never missed an episode. (I was 18.)
I suspect in addition to time period, it was also a victim of changing tastes in music among young people. THE SONNY AND CHER HOUR was the big variety hit of the 70s and even that petered out pretty quickly thanks to their divorce and changing tastes.
