Anyone going to see this at Goodspeed in July?

Loved the premiere at University of Michigan a few years ago. Quirky story that is very faithful to the book. I wish the production extended into the fall when I would have a chance to see it.

I liked the idea of the book so much better than I liked the book itself. It doesn't seem like the kind of thing that would lend itself to musicalization, but I'm definitely curious about it.

It will be interesting to see how it works at Goodspeed. The score has some truly lovely passages.

Phyllis: You don't think it lends itself to musicalization? The emotional themes of change in a society, a coming of age story, traditions. Then, the statue on stage with letters physically falling off. Just think if they had the inscription engraved or cast like 99% of memorial plaques they wouldn't have a story...

True, but the whole thing about them using less letters each time one falls off seems to just lend itself to text more than it does stage, you know? But like I said, I wasn't wild about the book, so perhaps the musical improves on it. I wish it no harm or anything, it just doesn't seem like a compelling candidate for musicalization.

Also, it's odd that they've changed the title (or rather, changed the title to the letters the original title represents).
