I find it hard to believe that CindersGolightly describes Lady, Be Good! as *****, assuming I've intuited what the four asterisks stand for. The show is an antique, with all that is implied by the team, but it's first-rate Gershwin and a great example of what Broadway did in it's pre-Oklahoma! days. It's historically important, full of great music, and a quite amazing introduction to antic musical theater of the jazz age. Patti Murin, whom I also love, is hardly the point.

I figured it was supposed to be a 30 Rock reference, I just thought saying "I've been secreting it" was hilarious.

I wonder if they could remix the 90s Gershwin Studio Cast albums to sound better?

I for one am psyched. I was fortunate enough to catch this production with a friend of mine, and while not quite as good as the last Encores I saw (Little Me!), I still adored it. Gershwin can do no wrong in my book, and being able to witness Tommy Tune doing his thing in person was an honor. Not to mention I got to witness my first onstage mishap that Douglas Sills and co. expertly played off. Hehe

Vis a vis remixing the Nonesuch version, if I recall correctly, it was recorded in a cavernous Hollywood studio, which didn't help. and I don't think it's particularly idiomatically performed, either. People who love it, or love the style of it, may have trouble getting used to the new one. Rob Fisher, who music directs the new one, has a real feel for the period, which I find quite thrilling -- like getting on a train back to the past -- but it's not for everyone. It's intentionally squarer than we're used to today, and, I suspect, much squarer in the way it almost-swings than the Nonesuch version. Also, the Nonesuch version had a lot of dance music that was expanded from an '80s (I believe) Goodspeed production, in a style that was completely out of period. The Encores production was much more faithful to a time when dance arrangements mostly consisted of playing different orchestrations of the melody, but rarely departing from it. Should be interesting to compare and contrast. The Encores one will be much more authentic, but that won't make everyone like it better.

Well that sounds wonderful, more period appropriate dance music! Haven't listened to the Nonesuch version in ages to recall how the dance music was.

I just listened to the 2 tracks linked above. I always enjoyed the Nonesuch album and when it came out I thought it was the best of the Gershwin show series they had done up until that point. we had a very successful production of LADY BE GOOD at the Shaw Festival (in Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario) in the summer of 1994 that was delightfully effervescent.  I liked the Nonesuch recording because it seemed to capture the energy of a 1920s musical comedy.

My introduction to the score (well, 8 songs from it) came by way of an Lp on the long vanished Monmouth-evergreen label that reissued original cast 78 rpm sides made by the London cast circa  1925. The sound was dim and the vocals were unexciting. The 1992 studio cast disc is brimming with energy and as a bonus includes enough dialogue to put the songs in context.

Cast albums are NOT "soundtracks."
Live theatre does not use a "soundtrack." If it did, it wouldn't be live theatre!

I host a weekly one-hour radio program featuring cast album selections as well as songs by cabaret, jazz and theatre artists. The program, FRONT ROW CENTRE is heard Sundays 9 to 10 am and also Saturdays from 8 to 9 am (eastern times) on www.proudfm.com

I just listened on Spotify and it sounds pretty good! (Of course, I'm at work and don't have the volume turned up all the way.) What a delight to relive such a fun show.

When I see the phrase "the ____ estate", I imagine a vast mansion in the country full of monocled men and high-collared women receiving letters about productions across the country and doing spit-takes at whatever they contain. -Kad
