Entrance Applause

I'm going to go out there on a limb and admit that I hate applause anywhere except at the end of a show. I understand, tolerate and do it myself at the end of musical numbers, but I find myself wishing that people didn't except if the musical numbers go straight to a black out, because I feel that in most shows, chamber musicals specifically, applause really disrupts the flow of the show and thus takes away from the story-telling.

The CHARACTER of Velma I feel deserves applause. Because it's such a STUNNING entrance.

I have seen the show where the actress playing Velma (usually a Broadway name, not famous) gets applause. Then the famous Roxie comes running out, and she gets no applause. Velma's entrance is just so wonderful - that it gets applause even if the audience isn't familiar with the actress playing the role.

It has to be a BIG name to deserve entrance applause. Preferably if the actor is returning to the stage after a long absence.

That said...I am always more disgusted by applause at the end of a performance that somehow manages to morph into "clap along to an invisible beat". You are supposed to be applauding the performers as they take their bows, not turning it into a damn audience clap along.

I really hate entrance applause. Although, as justme2 said, if it's a legend making a return to the stage, I can understand it.

There's nothing like a big hand on your opening! (Sorry, it's an oldie but goodie gag).

I can understand entrance applause if it's someone big or a well-known performer. Other than that, I don't get it. It seems like entrance applause is getting way too common, like standing ovations. I mean.....they haven't done anything, what are you clapping for? The fact that he or she showed up to the performance?

I love entrance applause. I like to clap when I'm excited to see someone. I don't see anything wrong with it.

I don't think that a character should get entrance applause but the actor portraying it. I wouldn't start applausing just anyone becuase they are playing Velma, Glinda or Elphaba. I particpate in entrance appluase based on my personal interest in the person. For instance, I am a huge fan of Joanna Gleason so I gave her entrance appluase in DRS even though only a few people were particpating along with me. On the other hand, I didn't give Jonathan Price entrance appluase becuase I'm not a huge fan of his even though everyone else did.
