I've never really saw the need for an entrance applause. It just kinda disrupts the show.

The following entrances are designed for entrance applause:
Max Bialystock....The Producers
Janet van de Graaf....The Drowsy Chaperone
Felix Ungar, Oscar Madison....The Odd Couple
Sid....The Pajama Game
Julia Roberts has been getting it, of course. However, it screws up the momentum of the play, as she talks through it and nobody can hear.

It's impossible to give anyone in the current Sweeney entrance applause, as they're not distinguished. However, Cerveris' entrance from the coffin usually gets it. This production is designed to have as little applause as possible. There is no room for it until 40 minutes in....

It was interesting that Jim Dale got no applause when he made his first entrance in 3PO when I saw it. Especially, considering he's a long-time London and New York performer with multiple awards to his credit. However, he did seem to garner the best reviews of anyone in the production. I guess when people are spending their life inside the Gershwin they have no time to study the history of the theatre
I always get so happy when I hear the entrance applauses for the leading ladies in the dreamgirls concert!!!

I deserve a standing ovation whenever I walk into a theatre after having paid $100.00+ to see a show. The cast should get on their knees and thank me! Especially after having seen the horror that is LeStat (which I only paid $30 to see). :o)

I realize the situation with Sweeney Todd.Possible or not, Patti actually did get entrance applause the night I saw it despite that.
Well...
Maria Friedman DID deserve entrance applause - while the WIW was running - she was just amazing!

How?
John Lloyd Young and the rest of the Jersey Boys...and they do, except for Daniel Reichard because he comes in the middle of a scene in the middle of Act 1 and its a horrible time for entrance applause (though broadway betty and I have tried to start some for him).

Applaud if you feel you must, but it should be reserved for beloved stars, not just the latest people to fill the dresses in Wicked.
When I saw DRS, Norbert got a great applause. This was about a month after he won the Tony. His performance literally made me want to run up to the stage and snog him, he was so fantastic.
Entrance applause. I understand why it's done, but I really don't think it's necessary. Ever. If you pay to see a show, and are curteous and attentive throughout the show, I think that implies you want to be there. During the curtain call, by all means cheer wildly. It's less annoying in musicals than plays...because thinking about it Norbert got mad applause at his entrance in DRS and I didn't care, but the applause for Julia in 3 Days of Rain halted the scene. If it was that noticable to me I'm sure it was awkward for the actors. Yankeefan when I saw it she didn't talk over it, she just waited until it died down. I felt like I was the only person there NOT clapping, lol.

Barrett Foa often gets an entrance applause.
We don't DO entrance applause in London. If there ever is any its some crazy American tourist
That aside I indulge myself when I am in NY! I love the fact that certain theatre stars are well known enough to merit applause. Over here joe schmo dont seem to know who is who.

When Pearl Bailey played Dolly, she got tremendous applause the moment she stepped off the trolley. She waited patiently but eventually turned to the audience and said, "What are ya'll clappin' for? I ain't done nothin' yet!"

I LOVE THAT!!!
That is awesome.
They make fun of that in "Musical of Musicals."
"The audience applauds wildly, even though she hasn't done anything yet!"
Is an entrance applause appropriate? Case by case basis. I can understand how it can interrupt a completely-sung through play especially if it was done in the middle of the play. But, if the audience doesn't care, then why not. Besides, no one can control the audience's reaction to an actor. Case in point, Lea Salonga's reprisal of Kim and when she played Eponine on Broadway. Huge applause when she came out. Didn't bother me nor it interrupted the play. A tad weird when the orchestra had to pause to allow for the well deserved extended ovation after singing "On My Own."

There was entrance applause both nights I saw "Barefoot" for all four actors.
And, no, I didn't start the clapping for Mister Wilson. :o)
