"From the second she warbled 'Screw the middle classes...' and had that dead-behind-the-eyes look, I knew I wouldn't be a fan of Madonna's EVITA."

With all due respect, I bet you probably "knew" it before you walked into the theatre. I think many "theatre-lovers" and "Lupone fans" went to see it wanting to hate every minute of it. Madonna was perfection!

I love your use of quotes, Curtain.

First...not much of a Lupone fan. Not even much of an Evita fan.

I am, however, a bit (though not too much) of a Madonna fan.

But more than that, I'm a fan of great acting. Hell...I'm a fan of good acting. I'm also a fan of interesting acting.

Not one of those superlatives could I use in terms of her performance.

Though I will say that I thought the whole movie was a bore and a bit 'dead-behind-the-eyes'.

And no...that wasn't the respect due me. Try again.

I am not ashamed to admit it (Hey, I am the one that said that I don't get what is so ooooo/ahhh about Sondheim) but I LOVED Madonna's performance. Granted, never saw Patti, but Madonna was awesome. And what are you talking about "dead-behind-the-eyes look" about the Middle classes. I thought she looked perfect. When she said "Screw them" it looked liked she wanted to take a some kind of weapon to them. I also think Antonio Banderas was leaps and bounds better than Mandy Patinkin. I said, it........so there. re: Evita

Please, please, please go listen to the OBCR again.

Mandy sings Che to perfection. He is sensational.

I don't like Mandy's voice. Well, let me take that back. When he goes into his "I have someone grasping my testicles as hard as possible" voice, I hate it (which he does most of the time. But, when he goes into his chest voice he sounds really good. He is impressing me on SUNDAY IN THE PARK dvd that I just got, though. But, for you Priest.....I will listen to it again. re: Evita

Go to 'Finishing the Hat' on the DVD. If that doesn't make you a Mandy fan, then it is a lost cause.

Yeah, I'm not a big Mandy fan either.

LOL. I haven't gotten that far. I started watching it last night but fell asleep because I drove many hours from watching JEKYLL AND HYDE in NC, but I will finish it tomorrow.

Never cared much for Patikin's voice, although I thought his performance in Evita was very good. However I L-O-V-E-D Antonio in the movie. I realize that technically they weren't playing the same character, in that the part of Che Guevera was reimangined as an observing everyman for the movie (an excellent choice, I might add), but I thought Antonio's interpretation was excellent. His singing was the biggest surprise of all. And his latin heritage lent a certain authenticity to the role. Again, an entirely different interpretation, but IMO, one more suited to the big screen.

I really think that we are talking apples and oranges in this thread. I've seen the movie AND the stage musical and it's very difficult to compare them because of the fact that they are, by nature, different. I loved "Evita" on the stage and thought both Lupone and Patikin were incredible and deserved their Tony's. I must admit that I was skeptical when the movie was about to be released and having already been burned by "The Wiz" and "A Chorus Line", I was not expecting much. I enjoyed the movie and I must also admit that I was pleasantly surprised by the performance of Antonio Banderas. I thought Madonna also did well and it's a movie that I now own on DVD.

The movie, being one that I continue to enjoy, is quite different from the stage production and, being a theatre person, I just prefer most things that I've seen on the stage that's been later made into a film.

I happen to like Mandy's voice quite a bit and it's difficult to find a stronger singer then Patti, so for me, if I had to choose a favorite, it would have to be the stage production.

Could Patti have been as good an Eva in the movie? Probably not. Could Madonna have sung Eva on stage? No way.

I think that both Antonio and Mandy could play the role of 'Che' on Broadway AND in the move but I personally prefer the voice of Mandy Patinkin and I still remember his incredible energy and the outstanding performance he delivered on Broadway.

As I said, I enjoy the performances in the move and I pop it in my DVD player and watch it every once in a while.

"Hello? Americans? Elaine Paige anyone? The original and best Evita on stage. She can sing (not scream like LuPone) and act (unlike Madonna, not that she is a stage Eva anyway)."

Vocally Elaine Paige is far from the best Evita! Her "Rainbow high" is dreadful! Way too high for her (but then again so it was for Madonna), she really has to struggle to hit the high notes. Vocally, the best songstress to warble through the score has been Julie Covington. She hit even the highest notes with ease, without screaming or struggling. There's not much warmth in her record-only-performance, but was there much warmth in LuPone's performance? The role was originally written as an ice-queen bitch, so...

As for the movie, I was surprised by Madonna's acting! She delivered a solid and believable performance. Her singing wasn't as good as some stage Evita's have been but her vocals did delivered the story and character forward, and as far as I'm concerned that' the point. And to tell you the truth, I don't think I ever want to hear Lupone sing "You must love me"... which Maddie sung beautifully!
