You're right, he's playing Sky. In fact, director Michael Grandage pursued him for the role.

Ewan actually began his training in theatre -- he left school at 16 to pursue his dream of acting -- he started as a stagehand at the Perth Rep just to get into that world, he then took a one year dramatic arts course (by audition) at Kirkcaldy College, and then was accepted (again, by audition) for the 3 year drama course at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London.

He was recently asked to take over for Hugh Jackman in "Boy from Oz", no wonder he turned that down to do something of higher caliber.
Regarding that other remark that he can't do a Scottish accent in Young Adam -- even though he's Scottish -- he just won BAFTA Scotland Best Actor for that film. He previously won the award in '97 for Trainspotting, another Scottish film.
