FIRST WIVES CLUB to Premiere in San Diego Summer '09

The First Wives Club – A New Musical will premiere at The Old Globe in San Diego in summer 2009, prior to Broadway.

The librettist is Tony Award winner Rupert Holmes (The Mystery of Edwin Drood).

Francesca Zambello (Broadway's The Little Mermaid and the Guthrie's Little House on the Prairie) will direct. The staging is reportedly scheduled to play the Globe July 15-Aug. 23, 2009, prior to Broadway. No casting has been announced.

Could they have picked a worse director?

Is this a first? A Jukebox musical based off of a film? Interesting...

Definitely not a jukebox musical though they should include "You Don't Own Me" which made for a wonderful ending to the original film.
I agree that Zambello is not the best choice for a director, how I wish Jack O'Brien was involved in this. I am quite excited by the idea of Rupert Holmes as the book writer though. However, this show will be all about who gets cast as the three women. I hope they get some heavy weight performers. Mary Testa as Brenda, Tonya Pinkins as Elise, and Donna Murphy (or Kate Burton) as Annie would be brilliant casting if they go for Broadway's elite.

They're still working on the score (though they had a developmental workshop some time ago,) but word last month was that Megan Mullally has been approached and showed interest once they have a finished project to bring to the table.

She alluded to some impending offers in a recent interview with Broadway.com, and it is believed THE FIRST WIVES CLUB is one of the things she is hinting at:

"As for the theater, I have offers for a couple of big Broadway things (top secret!), depending on what happens with the pilot. They're both a year or two down the road."

Her pilot was not picked up, so she looks likely to be available.
Tonya Pinkins: Then we had a "Lot's Wife" last June that was my personal favorite. I'm still trying to get them to let me sing it at some performance where we get to sing an excerpt that's gone.
Tony Kushner: You can sing it at my funeral.

Megan I could see in this...not sure about the choice of the director.
Well I didn't want to get into it, but he's a Satanist. Every full moon he sacrifices 4 puppies to the Dark Lord and smears their blood on his paino. This should help you understand the score for Wicked a little bit more. Tazber's: Reply to Is Stephen Schwartz a Practicing Christian

I thought her pilot with Alicia Silverstone had been picked up. Thanks for the info, somethingwicked. I'd love to see her in this musical. I assume she was approached for Annie, since from what I understand, Elise is now an African-American chanteuse and not a fading Hollywood star.

I figured that songs performed by commercial artists in the past constituted it to be a jukebox musical....but thinking about it, I see why it may not be.

ray, her show was rumored to be in consideration for a midseason pick up but was not one of the five series ABC ended up taking for the spring.

The article doesn't say that the songs featured in the musical have been recorded in the past, it just says that the songwriters have composed songs that have been recorded by a plethora of famous artists.
Somethingwicked, that's good to know. Just tonight I was telling my boyfriend I was excited about seeing the new show with Megan Mullally and Alicia Silverstone during mid-season, he said it sounded a bit too similar to Kath & Kim, either way I guess I have no reason to be excited anymore. However, I do hope this means Mullally will stick to the stage for a while.
