The pictures do look great... I am not a fan of Patrick's long, flowing locks, but that's ok!
However, am I the only one still bothered that Emmy, a 17 year-old is playing Christine? Perhaps if it was a straight play, using someone that young would be fine. But I know I sure don't want to hear a 17 year-old attempting to sing "Think Of Me" and "The Phantom of the Opera." Even if she is good for her age, I don't see how the depth and strength of her voice will be where it should be for this role. Nothing against Emmy, I just think the age range the producers and directors went for is way off.

I got a better look at the picture of Emmy Rossum and Patrick Wilson and I like his look. He just has his long hair tucked back--it's not the mullet everyone was fearing on the IMDB board. I think he looks quite handsome and dashing. That's the way Joel Schumacher envisioned Raoul and I can't wait to see the sword fight in the Cemetery.
Emmy looks darling and I can't wait to hear "All I Ask Of You!"
Also, the Masquarade Ball looks fascinating. I can't wait to see it with folks in motion instead of just the still.

Posted: 5/19/04 at 8:16amEmmy's voice is able to not only handle the song, but give an inspired performance of it, "trust me"....and believe me, I am TIRED of seeing 41 year old Christines on the various stages of the world, thank you very much.

the lair scene does look kind of cheesy. i know it's just a still, but it looks like a disney ride or something .. oh wow that actually would be a really neat idea.. phantom of the opera ride at disney world.. wow, the possibilities!
anyway, i feel like the way that scene is done on stage with the dry ice is a lot more effective than using real water .. i was wondering how they were going to try to achieve it in the movie.

Posted: 5/19/04 at 10:54amThis movie has the potential to be amazing. As spectacular as the stage show is...it has alwasys left me dissapointed. I think it belongs on film. I am concerned Schumacher directing...he's a little to much of a hollywood type I would feel more confident with this in the hands of an artist like sam mendes. And Rauls hair may be period, but I still think it looks lame. Emmy Rossum makes a hot christine though. Can't wait to see how it turns out!

There is a new article on the RUG site (also Variety on line).

"...The>http://tinyurl.com/2ycc2>http://tinyurl.com/2ycc2
"...The no-media/distribs-only sesh featured a tantalizing five-minute seg that's presumably the opening of the film: A black-and-white sequence that suddenly and successfully bleeds into color. The next five minutes offered a sumptuous, eye-popping montage of scenes rapidly cut to the overture and the chorus singing "Masquerade."
Stars Gerard Butler, Emmy Rossum and Patrick Wilson were seen but not heard. Still, the Cannes audience responded enthusiastically to the presentation, with sumptuous sets and costumes highlighting the Phantom's underground lair, opera galas, sword fights, clattering horse carriages and, yes, that crashing chandelier...."

Posted: 5/19/04 at 1:48pmThe Masquerade picture does not look ANYTHING like the magnificent Paris Opera House. Why they didn't shoot there I'll never know.

But you have no idea what kind of training she's had. As I understand it, she was part of the Met's Children's chorus for a number of years, so she started her training at a young age. Please don't pre-judge someone before you've actually heard her sing.

Posted: 5/19/04 at 6:09pmI don't like the title of the new song for the Phantom "No One Would Listen". It sounds way to Maury Yesten for the ALW version. It better be short and not get in the way of anything. Where the hell are they gonna put it? I expected them to be cutting songs not adding them. There is no way this film is gonna make it to the screen intact. I'll bet lots of songs are gonna have all kinds of cuts and snips here and there.... it's so sad...

Posted: 5/19/04 at 6:34pmno disrespect to phantom, but, like any andrew lloyd webber musical, take out all the reprises and "different" songs with the same melody, and how many original songs do you actually have? i personally wouldn't miss if they took out notes II / twisted every way, for starters.

I'm not a fan of Raoul's new hair style...they definately make him look like a whimp.
I do love the masquerade...anyone notice the stairs look like the ones from Titanic (the movie).
Hate the hannibal costumes. Did ballet dancers REALLY wear that back then. NO!

Posted: 5/19/04 at 9:27pmLike I said, I have nothing against Emmy and I hope she kicks ass! I just am VERY skeptical about someone so young singing this role. That's all. I hope to be proven wrong! I would LOVE this movie to do well.

Posted: 5/20/04 at 2:35amFirst off, many thanks for the pic link. I am so excited for the film's December release. Of course, there was to be a new song, so that Lord Lloyd Webber can be nominated for another Oscar for Best Orig. Song (cue Evita's "You Must Love Me"). I have always loved the stage play and can't wait to see what they keep, what they cut, but ultimately what art they make...
