You're supposed to avoid honey?? my friends always use it to help them!

I hate honey so it doesn't bother me :)
and all that I could do because of you was talk of love...

re: FOODS Singers should avoid

Well, sodas, obviously...

And that stuff Carlotta gives Christine to drink before she performs in (the Yeston/Kopit) "Phantom." re: FOODS Singers should avoid

re: FOODS Singers should avoid

really honey??? i was always told to use it with lemon and hot water? not good?

re: FOODS Singers should avoid

It's not. Milk (and dairy in gneral) produces more phlegm, so you're constantly clearing your throat onstage and can't sing very well.

re: FOODS Singers should avoid

Caffeine should be avoided if you're singing. It dries out the chords. I should know- my coach yells at me for drinking iced coffee, which I LOVE from Starbucks. (w/ half and half and Sugar in the Raw, so i'm not getting any bonus points.)

re: FOODS Singers should avoid

Milk sometimes upsets my stomache as does my voice. So I've been keeping away from plain milk lately and eating cheese and yogurt (i love yogurt) for early hours before doing a show.

Calvin, what is the stuff that they used in Phantom? I heard it was used back then to help the singer project more because there weren't any mikes? But I don't know the whole story.
you say i'm weird! look at everyone you're sitting with! and hey, those guys over there just threw napkins up in the air like they were on something! it's contajous! you can't help it!

re: FOODS Singers should avoid

Hi, Idina.

I don't remember what it was, but in the show, Carlotta -- who is more of an evil character in this version -- gives Christine something to drink before the performance that makes her miss all the high notes. Of course, the phantom kills her later (just how depended on the version of the show -- once he slit her throat, another time he electrocuted her).

BTW, be careful with cheese and yogurt. They can have the same phlegm-creating effects as milk. eta: ignore this last part -- I just reread your post and realized I totally misinterpreted what you were saying about cheese and yogurt.

Everyone goes on about the virtues of honey, but I recently found out that it's awful for your voice, though I can't remember why. Really acidic things are bad, too. The best thing to drink right before a show is water, and lots of it, preferrably not freezing cold water, because it'll cool your vocal chords, which you don't want after working so hard to warm them up.

re: FOODS Singers should avoid

i know its not a food but the sore throat spray cloraseptic and such is bad for your voice, i've never used it before i sing but my musical director said that it works once or twice and you can hit higher notes but it hurts your vocal cords soon after and you can't sing as well for as long.

re: FOODS Singers should avoid

See I found this tea from Lipton, Green Tea with citrus. It's advertised all the time in magazines but hard to find in the stores! I love it! The citrus dosen't seem to bother me. It soothes my throat more than anything.

Throat Coat is an amazing tea!(i love and sometimes live on teas). It's kinda nasty at first but it's really good once you're used to it.

Throat coat is amazing. I can go from barely having a voice to being somewhat normal after drinking Throat coat. I heard something about steaming turnips that helps? Not sure???

Really, Junk food of ANY kind is bad....

re: FOODS Singers should avoid

about any grocery store should have it..it's brand is "Traditional Medicinals and it's a green box with a dark red line that says "Throat Coat" in white...

re: FOODS Singers should avoid

Throat Coat is made by Traditional Medicinals, and most grociery stores carry it. I grew up drinking different Traditional Medicinals when I had colds and such (Gypsy Cold Care is great, by the way), so I'm used to the taste, but a lot of people don't like the taste of throat coat. It literally feels like it is coating your throat.

Avoid spicy foods that can cause acid reflux cause that can damage your chords. This is why I am a costumer, I love my mexican food. re: FOODS Singers should avoid

I heard the acids in tomatoes and vitamin C can be a problem on performance nights.

sage extract is great stuff. you can buy it at most health food stores. just put a dropperful in a bottle of water, shake it up and drink. makes your throat as good as new!

re: FOODS Singers should avoid

Really it all comes down to paying attention to what helps/hinders your body. What works for one person will hurt another. I have a friend who has no reflux problems and drinks orange juice before every show or concert. I know an opera singer who drinks a glass of milk before every show because it actually helps him. This might sound strange, but certain bottled waters dry me out (i.e. Evian).
