Dammit, I can't eat cigarettes anymore?
Tea works really well for me, especially the mint flavors. Its rather soothing.
Yea, I hear stay away from cough drops because they numb your chords and you can't feel the damage you are doing to them when you are singing.
Cough Drops are very bad for your vocals. but try broncolin's Solid Caramels either with or without honey( it depends on the person) it not only soothes dry cords, but it moisturizes too.
Throat coat has all these good things in it, like slippery elm and liccorice root, but when I drank it I got so ill, and it didn't make my throat feel any better. I stick to the herbal teas when my voice is feeling super crummy. And water.
And even though cough drops are chock full of sugar and do no good, I can't help but suck them down.
Better than throat coat secret: nuke some coca cola in the microwave with a wedge of lime until the fizz is mostly out (I do it for like two minutes) -it works FABULOUSLY (it almost acts like a thick sugary tea) and it tastes WAY better!
omg! i do that too, except i use Sprite because im allergic to caffeine and i put in a whole lime wedge.
ok two things!
This might sound strange, but certain bottled waters dry me out (i.e. Evian). -- this actually isn't weird at all- i can't tell you about evian, but i know dasani actually puts negligible amounts of salt in their water for 'purest flavor,' so it's not a surprise bottled waters like that would dry you out.
also- are all cough drops really bad for your voice? i know most have menthol, which kills your throat, but what about the ones without? aquadrops, halls fruit breezers?
i'm at a music theatre camp right now and it's amusing to see how many of the singers eat ice cream at lunch and dinner. heh.
I like green grapes before singing. They seem like they have less natural sugar than red or purple grapes. They feel like they sweep mucus out of my throat. They also are sort of hydrating...in a way.

Chocolate is really bad for your voice too. I guess it's the caffeine (though a small amount) and the dairy put together. I love drinking green tea though. Tastes great and it's really good for you!
Never heard of that warm coke and lime thing. Sounds... interesting.
I must admit, citrus never seemed to hurt me before... i dunno. But Throat Coat and Hearbal stuff rocks!!!!!! I just can never find out what to eat for lunch or dinner before performing. Any suggestions?
Every studying singer I know has certain lists of foods not to eat and drinks that are damaging, etc. And I, myself, try to follow these lists...but oddly enough, As I was walking down the street one random day I saw Eden Espinosa eating french fries out of her McDonold's bag and she was headed to the Plymouth Theatre (at the time)
I know there are some haters of her voice and yes she claims to have no formal vocal training, but no one can deny that she can sing extremely high and blow the general audience away, and she was eating garbage before.
That has just always perplexed me! :)
Not to really be correcting what you said, but honey is GREAT for singers. Usually you should drink it with hot tea, but honey is great for your vocal chords.

Milk is not good for people in general. Just go to notmilk.com for more info about it, but I make it a point to avoid dairy (and soymilk doesn't taste that bad once you get used to it).

Ugh. That's a bit off topic. You can make anything look bad if you want it to. Milk is good for a lot of people, too. I drink soy milk too because I need the soy protein. I've consumed it for two years and still think it tastes like crap.

For the record, tenor Placido Domingo always drinks black decaff directly before going on stage.
Tea without any milk or sugar helps me.
All of these are interesting points.
I don't know if this is necessarily true for everyone or not, but I found that you won't get that phelem thing from lactose-free milk.
