Fosse- believe it or not, high schoolers CAN make broadway quality productions. I can easily think of 10 people I know off my head who could do an amazing job at all 3 roles. I'm sure they selected this high school carefully and I'm sure they know the level of talent there.

Again, regardless of talent, I'm not convinced that a high school girl should be singing Christine. Just because you can pop out an E6 doesn't mean that you should.

Some girls are natural high sopranos. Say the girl is a senior who's going to be an opera major next year. There are 17 and 18 year old girls who can hit those notes without hurting themselves. Don't underestimate them just because of age.
But people like Amy Nutall are few and far between.

But they're there. I'm SURE the high school knows what they have and it's probably already roughly precast. They wouln't do this if they didn't have the talent.

It isn't just about natural range. You need the technique and vocal maturity to back it up. The cadenza is not only freakishly high, it is heavy: it requires a LOT of endurance that most high school girls just won't have. Says a 19-year-old who is a fairly high soprano, herself.

Yeah, but there will probably be like 2 performances.
Well, I'd say probably four (Thurs-Sun) and also rehearsels. That's a lot of singing.

Well, I guess time will tell. I have faith in them, though.
I don't know what to think. It's not that far from me I will deff. check it out, just to see if they can pull it off. Why would they not try it at Cincinnati Conservatory of Music?

^ Maybe because they, like many of us, are sick of Phantom?

now...phantom...in 10 years i can look forward to 15 year old girls running up some black painted steps to sing defying gravity in an "amazing" wicked performance...some musicals should be outlawed from high schools...
Hey guys remember that "shows you never want to see done in a high school" thread?
It's coming! It's coming! The cardboard chandelier! The cardboard chandelier!

Yeah the role of Christine is advanced for a teenager. But sustaining an A flat, B flat C natural and high E all in a row is NOTHING compared to the Carlotta stuff. Now THAT **** is heavy.
There better be some mad transposition going on!

HDThoreau2 and the kids at Xenia High must be beside themselves with grief over this news!

evadiva: Yeah, I'm not even touching Carlotta with a ten foot pole. But at least her top notes are mostly stacatto

Baldwin Wallace (college) in Cleveland was selected to produce 'Phantom' as well for their next school year.

The Whole Reason they did that was as a pilot program, to see if it was worth releasing the rights to schools and universities. So releasing it too an opera school makes no sense at all

That's what they say, but it's very unlikely going to be true. Besides, Phantom is hardly the most difficult score...and I find it rather amusing that people are expecting to see Broadway quality productions at the high school and college levels. You people need to get a grip.
This is why I secretly love Fosse76.
Liberty University has also been granted rights to perform it in the spring.

yeah, but almost any school or university can get the rights now. We'll have little Phantoms popping up all over soon, and you tube will be full of them!
Broadway Quality? Highly unlikely. THAT being said, there are high schools that have great resouces and great cross discipline collborations that can do a damn good production. You don't go to SEE a high school show to REPLACE b'way. And you go with different expectaions then you would at a b'way stage.
I'm usually very proud of what my hs kids achieve. However, the year we did Les Miz (when it first became available for HS) parents (well, a few) kept telling us it was better than the recent tour that came through. While that was nice to HEAR, I didn't buy it.
Expectations change a lot.
Here's a link with some footage from a college and a high school production that was on BWayWorld TV a while back to advertise the rights now being available.
