re: 'Fame' THe Movie 2009

yeah watched this a few days ago

You watch the 1st part of the trailer and go 'yes..they are keeping it the same' but then as the trailer carries on your hopes are dashed by the god awful R n B version of the title song (the song is supposed to be a high energy celebration of life, this is flat) and the shiny happy cinematography

as ive said before this will be High School Musical meets Step Up, it will have none of the raw grit and energy that the original Oscar Winning film had

Rather pathetic that they cant be decent and answer like adults.

Uptil the remember's started i thought "Man I was wrong bout this film, this is actually gonna be good!" But then it just got worse and worse and worse, I suppose there's only ONE good thing about this film No ZAC BL*ODY EFRON!

re: 'Fame' THe Movie 2009

Is'nt this just way too late. Especially when the Step Up movies seem to have already cornered the market.

I agree with Songanddanceman that they would have taken all the grit that was so present in Alan Parker's original and probably replaced it with such classic lines such as "I'm gonna make it, I'll be the best"

Can we make it stop please!!!

Why remake this film in the first place?

Why remake this film in the first place?

these things are rarely motivated by anything other than financial reasons.

That being said i don't really have an issue with remakes, particularly if they are trying something new with the property, I just view it in the same way as a cover of a song, or i guess a new production of a show. The damning of remakes just because it's a remake actually annoys the hell out of me.

I actually kind of like the revamped title song, and to be honest find the original film drab rather than gritty, it's show biz it should be a little glam and glossy.

re: 'Fame' THe Movie 2009

are you kidding me????

How should a film about a run down school where students are living well below the poverty line and made by a filmmaker who had the brains to make the whole thing feel almost documentary be a bit more glam and glitz?

The original is not dreary, its a drama, a real focused drama on the harsh realities of working your arse off for something that may never happen, or dealing with the world when your home life is so poor.
Its not supposed to be glitz or glam, it was made to be exactly the opposite, it was made to warn people about the dangers of Instant Fame and how brutal it can be

Im sorry but that comment has really angered me and i dont mean to be nasty but has to be one of the most stupid comment i have ever heard on here.

People hated the TV show and musical because it missed the point completely, it shows everything to be fun and colorful when its not.

The new version of the title song also manages to miss the point, its a song about celebration of your dream, a chance to throw your hands in the air and rejoice, the new one falls flat, its slow, its typical of today and it has no heart.

re: 'Fame' THe Movie 2009

People are so fed up with the whole glitz and glamour of showbiz. We all know that that's only a small portion of what goes on, and Fame was such a landmark film, not because the songs and choreography were groundbreaking but because it showed a different perspective of what happens behind the scenes.

I fear this film is just taking a edgy, different, dark film and turning it into a money making, r n b dance film. I'm so fed up of watching programmes about happy kids going to happy schools that are easy to get into and their only problems are whether they are going to have cavier and cucumber sandwhiches with the crusts on or off! This is primarily why Britannia High failed. It was the UK equivalent of Fame: The Tv Series, which was cheesy happy and not different.

I'm guessing that this film will have a lot of kids that come from Brooklyn and The Bronx who've lived terrible lives and this is their way out. But this isn't anything new or edgy, if we want this we'll go watch Step Up thanks very much.

On a seperate note, i don't suppose anyone here watched Almost Famous, a 6episode series set in a PA school. It's what Britannia High should've been. It wasn't happy and clappy. It had brilliant actors, who gave amazing performances. It made me really look at the business i want to be in, and how bloody hard its gonna be. It was gritty and British! This is the type of thing people should be watching, not Britannia High and not Fame The Movie circa 2009!

Almost Famous couldnt get the balance right either. This was a cringeworthy and hysterically bad show which made the acting in Britannia High almost oscar worthy. Even its production company couldnt bury it quick enough. you should have seen how much didnt make the screen

Another load of crap like the High School Musical rubbish thats been around recently. Film companies are just cashing in the teen movie craze thats now. Sadly they are now about to ruin a true classic of the cinema. 'Fame' should be left alone.

re: 'Fame' THe Movie 2009

If it helps the matter at all..I think the R&B 'Fame' theme is actually the credits song, i.e it'll be sung by the Cheetah Girls or something ridiculous...but won't appear in the actual film.

The trailer looks ok, but yeah completely agree with the almost immediate Step Up look/feel, which cheapens the concept of Fame entirely.

I watched a bit of Brittania High and tried Almost Famous...can't say I really liked either further than watching Aaron Johnson and Mitch Hewer sulk around (although Mitch's strange new look wasn't appreciated).

As a teenager, I felt so patronized by some of the stuff going on, the 30+ year old writers essentially telling us how life must be...the Black guy in Brittania High OF COURSE being involved in gun crime, having dyslexia OF COURSE being the end of the world for a teen at an arts school etc.

re: 'Fame' THe Movie 2009

hey Songanddance

Sorry my last comment was far too dismissive. But really you took what i said far too much to heart.

You've got to remember that this is a different interpretation of the property and the owners of the rights have no responsibility to stick to the tone of the original in anyway. They are going to make it in a way they think is gonna sell now and that means cleaner and more escapist.

I'd hardly use the word documentary to describe the original, i personally think it was filled with social problems with faces rather than real characters, not particualrly any less cliched than the myriad of dance/showbiz movies about kids trying to escape their problems, that have been made since. it was just a bit earlier, and in many ways probably cemented some of the cliches.

The cover of the song doesn't miss the point it's actually probably just trying to make a different point to the original.

This is of course only my opinion, which i'm very much entitled to have, as are you. You clearly take the film a lot more seriously than i do, and it obviously means a lot to you. I know you work in the industry, was Fame an inspiration in some way?

I know how it can get when it feels like someone is attacking any piece of Art that means a lot to you, it's hard not to take it personally, been there done that myself a lot of times. I'm sorry if I offended you, it certainly wasn't my intention. I have a lot of respect for the opinions you write on here, and you're one of the people i look out for comments from.

However on this occasion we clearly differ

p.s. just for the record i found the musical drab too.

re: 'Fame' THe Movie 2009

Much of the film was actually documentary, Parker just took is camera around the school filming the real kids going about their day to day routine.
You also cant make a different point when it comes to something like 'Fame', that's Fame!!, that would be like taking star wars and remaking it as a rom com

But hey, each to their own, ive just never stumbled across anyone who thought that way about the original film.
