Hey I'm doing a persuasive speech on why people should spend as much money supporting live theatre as they do cinema and i need some cultural contributions from musicals for one of my points....
So what are some quotes from musicals that a lot of people hear all the time but probably don't know they come from musical theatre?
Also, any people that the masses would not have been able to enjoy had they not gotten their start on the Great White Way

I think the songs that people will know best are Put on a Happy Face, Tea for Two, and I Want To Be Happy. You could also mention how originally Hollywood came to Broadway looking for product, not the other way around.
Or just ask how many of them have LiVe.lAuGh.L0vE <3 somewhere on their myspace or facebook, and then tell them its from Follies. BAM

Posted: 11/8/08 at 10:05pmThe only line I can think of at the moment is "I'm a pretty girl, mama!" I've heard that used and lampooned many times.

I would recommend going with popular films which started as stage musicals. So many people think that "The Sound of Music" starred Julie Andrews, when in my mind it starred Mary Martin.
No Broadway, no Sound of Music on TV every year for Easter weekend.
"West Side Story" was most people's first exposure to Natalie Wood. Well, I think Carol Lawrence must have paved the way.......
That sort of thing.

Songs that are very popular that some people may not know came from a musical:
And I'm Telling You I'm Not Going
Do Re Mi
Aquarius
I'll Never Fall in Love Again
And intothewoods2 is right, there probably isn't a more popular phrase from musical theatre than "Sing out, Louise!"

My friend always tells me "Good Morning, Starshine" in the morning, and I'm almost positive she's never even seen Hair.
Also "It's a hard knock life" is a popular one... and "The sun'll come out tomorrow" is overdone, even though I'm pretty sure everyone knows that's from Annie.
"Anything you can do I can do better" is pretty common.
