Posted: 10/15/07 at 7:55amI really hope that you will see Fantasia as planned. I saw her in the show this summer and it was definitely worth travelling all the way to NY from the opposite side of the globe. :)

Yes, TCP is usually at TKTS.
Having seen the show (again) last week, I want to echo the praise for Fantasia. Montego Glover was passable as Celie, but Fantasia brings the show to another level.

Oh boo hoo. Poor Fantasia doesn't have enough energy to scream a banal eleve o'clock number (and nothing much else) and has to miss Wednesday matinees.
Sorry. I had to. I could understand if she was onstage in every scene and had 10 songs, but it's one freakin' song at the end and a couple of other riffs throughout the rest of the show. Come on.

Posted: 10/15/07 at 5:28pmI heard she was out all weekend? Is this true? I heard that Montego Glover missed the final rehersal for the Behind the Iron Mask reading because she was on at Purple.

I did see Fantasia in the show and I was as unimpressed with the whole thing as I was with LaChanze. I just think the part is badly written and that it is laughable that these actresses miss consecutive performances performing a role that is basically nothing, despite the billing.

It's time for Broadway composers to re-evaluate their writing styles so they can write scores which can be sung by the same performers 8 times a week. Remember, the vocal chords are only muscles and as such are subject to fatigue and stress.
Irving Berlin, Cole Porter, Jerry Herman and Richard Rodgers could write scores that didn't have to be screamed through and the stars rarely (if ever) missed performances to "rest up".
This is live theater, not a recording studio!

Posted: 10/15/07 at 7:46pmI agree with you Dollypop! It seems like everything nowadays is "how high can I belt??" ... and don't get me wrong, I like belting as much as the next guy, but it is slowly killing singer's voices. I don't care how trained you are. Singing Defying Gravity 8 times a week isn't healthy. (as much as I love that song).

i always got the impression from this show that it was written with so little work with and the actresses and actors had to sass it up to make it seem like something awe inspiring. if every one of them sang it in a regular tone, people would realise most of the score isn't very good.
i do think i enjoyed the show more than most of these people in this thread tho.

On that note...
You know, even though I'm a democrat, Rupert Murdoch, if you're looking for a replacement for Clive Barnes when he croaks, I could probably write a review ten times better than him. I'll make sure I stay awake.

Posted: 10/15/07 at 10:21pmReally, she only has "I'm Here", and that isn't the most challenging somg to sing. Most of it is very slow. Seriously, composers need to find a balance between the performers (Celie should have several good songs) and try not to make it so that a performer (even though Celie is a weak excuse for missing quite a bit of shows) doesn't have to strain their voice 8 times a week.

Posted: 10/15/07 at 10:31pmHonestly I've never cared for Fantasia's voice. Especially as one for Broadway. I see why people like her, but I guess she's just not my taste. Good for her though, for having a successful career.

Posted: 10/16/07 at 12:44amI work at TCP. She missed all weekend. Ya never know if she'll be there. She has also called out minutes before show time numerous times.

Fantasia's attendence has been much better since she stopped doing the Wednesday matinees, though it's true for a couple of months the situation was not good. She was evidently very sick all weekend, but hopefully will be well again for the Wednesday evening show.
Here I Am, I'm not sure why you would need someone to let you know if Fantasia is at tomorrow night's show. Didn't you say you were seeing it?
