It occurred to me last night when I was listening to JCS that a lot of ALW shows have narrators who break the 4th wall, so who's your favorite?
Che
Narrator (Joseph...)
Judas
Joe Gillis
Am I missing anyone?

But I love the Narrator in JOSEPH, too.

Percy: Sink me! If it isn't Javvurt!
Javert: Zsah-vair, it's pronounced Zsah-vair.
Pecry: But it's spelled J-A-V-E-R-T Javvurt.
Javert: Repeat after me Zsah...Zsah....
Percy: Oh! Zsa-Zsa! Like the Gabor sister! Well I personally have always prefered Eva.

Judas doesn't really ever break the fourth wall. I wouldn't really call him a narrator.
I love the character of Che, but I guess the Narrator in Joseph is really the biggest part in that show. But Che is just so much more cryptic.

I thought this thread was asking who is our favorite Narator. For me that would be Stephanie J. Block. I saw (and met) her when I was 13.
To answer the real question, Che without a doubt.

I really wouldn't put Judas as a "Narrator." He never breaks the 4th wall. All the "My mind is clearer now" and "I only want to know" is directed at Jesus, not the audience.
I would say The Narrator in Joseph--Maria Friedman, of course . . . and then Che--Antonio Banderas.

What about Bertie Wooster in 'By Jeeves', a personal favortite of mine. I would have to say though, that the narrator on 'The Likes of us' CD takes the prize over them all.
If you've listened to it you know what I mean.

Posted: 8/18/06 at 9:36amDidn't the character of Alex in "Aspects of Love" break "the fourth wall" three times: when he first appears singing "Love Changes Everything) which is clearly addressed to the audience by his position on the stage; at the end of Act II as a soldier when he sums up the status of George's marriage as he ostensibly reads a letter; and when he sings a short refrain of "Love changes Everything" before the final curtain?

Hawker,
I think you're absolutely right! Alex does break the fourth wall and basically addresses the audience in those instances. ASPECTS OF LOVE is my favourite ALWebber musical and I saw it at the West End and on Broadway.

Posted: 8/18/06 at 12:11pmThe character of Joe Gillis in SUNSET BOULEVARD as the Narrator however came originally as a concept from the movie classic on which the stage musical was based.

Posted: 8/18/06 at 7:11pmDoes Alex really break the 4th wall? I always considered those examples as introspective and not at all addressed to the audience.
