The ultimate of kitsch...
"Total Eclipse of the Heart" - DOTV
Totally love the song, and while I prefer the German incarnation, I'll never forget the wave of applause that this number got when the intro started in NY.

"The Revolutionary Costume" from Grey Gardens
"God, That's Good!" from Sweeney Todd
There are a few others, but those two come to mind right away.

Masquerade from "Phantom of the Opera"
I just love the gasp that is STILL causes in the audience when the staircase becomes visible...especially in Vegas where it is even BIGGER.

"Revolutionary Costume" for sure.
Can I say that my least favorite would have to be "That Was a Real Nice Clambake" from CAROUSEL? I mean, you leave with that glorious "Soliloquy"....and come back to "That was a real nice clambake/We're mighty glad we came." Really?

theatrekid - my director when I did Carousel, hated the clambake number, so we cut it haha.
I'd have to say my favorites are
"Back at Work/Forget About the Boy" -Thoroughly Modern Millie
"Sunny Side to Every Situation" (2001 Revival) - 42nd Street. I LOVED the lights coming on showing the actors in their dressing rooms behind the scrim. That thing was f*cking huge!

I adore the black band holding on the Phantom's mask. ~ Jenna2

I never get tired of 'God, that's good' from Sweeney Todd - it's got nearly enough action and melodic invention to fill a lesser show all by itself...

theaterkid, That's my problem with Hammerstein. I can't pick a favorite set of lyrics of his because for every "Soliloquy" or "What's the Use of Wond'rin?" theres a Clambake song, which I don't even think is all that terrible, just too jolly for Carousel. If there were more subtext in the jolly opening (like "Together Wherever We Go" in Gypsy) I'd be happier. I do love Ockie though, don't get me wrong. He's the reason why we're here discussing the musical theatre. Or at least one of the reasons why.

I always thought One Night in Bangkok when originally opening Act TWO for CHESS was always really good.
"Whenever I get gloomy with the state of the world, I think about the arrivals gate at Heathrow Airport. General opinion's starting to make out that we live in a world of hatred and greed, but I don't see that. It seems to me that love is everywhere. Often it's not particularly dignified or newsworthy, but it's always there - fathers and sons, mothers and daughters, husbands and wives, boyfriends, girlfriends, old friends. When the planes hit the Twin Towers, as far as I know none of the phone calls from the people on board were messages of hate or revenge - they were all messages of love. If you look for it, I've got a sneaky feeling you'll find that love actually is all around."
