gfaustwa, I feel the same way. Given how Act 2 grows darker and darker as it barrels toward its inevitable conclusion, it makes sense that the music becomes more mellow and somber. The true character work (through music) is in the second act.
I have to revise and say I love just about the entire score. The lyrics are genius-primal, moving, existential. Truly beautiful. I love a musical where you go from dancing in your seat to having your heartbroken. I will say when the press preview happened and I heard "A Girl Before" I initially didn't like it. Thought it was awful. With repeating listening, I find it absolutely beautiful and captivating.

Yep, yep, and yep. While the OLCR is sorta kinda a nice memento, I'm desperately hoping we're not going to have to rely on bootlegs to hear the Broadway versions. And yes, by the third viewing I was blown away by Jennifer's version of A Girl Before.
Hell, I'm ready to mortgage the house and put up the 55-large to get the cast recording done!
'You are what you wear' was definitely my favorite!
I kid of wished they'd done the live cast recording treatment on this one. Part of the beauty of the score was how it transitioned in and out of the book scenes.
I'd kill for a recording of some of those transition songs; especially the one that ends with "no one will know, what's underneath." Completely thrilling.
The new addition to Nice Thought (tell me...I want to...) is stunning and totally missed when listening to the OLCR version, as well.
