Posted: 4/17/04 at 7:59pmMy favorite is the Lyceum. The woodwork in that theatre is exquisite. I saw "Mornings at Seven" there, the theatre itself made the experience that much better. I don't think I've ever had that experience besides in that particular theatre. The story of the hole in the ceiling where the owner would come from his apartment above the theatre to watch his wife in shows and give her a sign in she was overacting. I think I remember the story correctly. If I'm wrong, let me know!

Posted: 4/17/04 at 8:06pmI have a soft spot for the Shubert, but I also love the Winter Garden

The Gershwin!
I love big theatres...they're comfortable, there's lots of room to walk around, and many things to look at before the show.
Not to mention you can see the stage really well from almost anywhere in the theatre.

Posted: 4/18/04 at 12:03ami am casting my vote for the helen hayes. i prefer a smaller, more intimate space. i have great memories of the plymouth but not nuts about the lobby, and amenities. my favorite big space? hmmmmm... i really like the vivien beaumont. and the st. james. what a great house that is!!

About the Minskoff
Don't forget Jekyl and Hyde to that theatre's flops! It may have had a cult, but the reviews were another story! And now Fiddler being called Goyim on the Roof...and revivals almost never get panned!
Jeez that place is cursed! Maybe they should have built that new bank building that's taking over the Henry Miller and demolish this theatre instead!
Oh yeah...and my favorite theatres are:
Circle in the Square (is this the only BWAY thrust theatre?)
John Golden (Small enough that every seat is a good seat)
Henry Miller (it's a dump but has great Urinetown and Caberat memories)
Cadillac Winter Garden (saw my 1st BWAY show there...Cats)
The Palace (oh come on...it's the Palace!)
and finally...
The Gershwin (maybe too big but leg room a plus and a nice museum to look at during intermission)

This is going to sound strange but I like the Neil Simon because it has a very certain smell that I love. I don't know It's probably like the cleaning products or something but I really enjoy it because the smell reminds me of the show that's there now.
But I also like the Gerswin and the Minskoff theaters because they have a lot of leg room! I'm a tall girl with long legs I need the space. The worst theater have been in for leg room is the New Amsterdam, when I saw lion king my knew were just about at my chest it was offal!

Posted: 4/18/04 at 1:37amNo one's mentioned the Walter Kerr???? It's been the prime Shubert house for straight plays on Broadway since the 80's and been my favorite simply because it has hosted ANGELS IN AMERICA, TAKE ME OUT, PROOF, LOVE! VALOUR! COMPASSION!, THE BEAUTY QUEEN OF LEENANE, SEVEN GUITARS, THE PIANO LESSON, TWO TRAINS RUNNING, THE WEIR, MOON FOR THE MISBEGOTTEN (2000), PRESENT LAUGHTER (with Frank Langella), I HATE HAMLET (all of which I saw -- some multiple times) and the curent 16 WOUNDED. In the last 15 years or so, I've spent more time in that theatre than in any other, so it's come to be a favorite.

That's pretty much how I am with the Shubert.... it's my fave for oh so many reasons..... not to mention the abnormal amount of time I spend there haha

Posted: 4/18/04 at 2:36amThe Gershwin by far is the most comfortable - big comfy seats, and lots of legroom. also has a great lobby (if you can call it that) and excellent sightlines, even from all the way up, in the last row of the balcony. I also love Circle in the Square, just for it's cool architecture, intimacy and the fact that "Rocky Horror" there was so AWESOME!!! The New Amsterdam, however, I think is the most beautiful. The Imperial Lobby is gorgeous too (not as nice as the New Amsterdam, but one of the nicer one's on broadway). I also enjoy the Plymouth, Neil Simon and John Golden for their intimacy, although the Neil Simon needs MUCH bigger seats (they're miniature, cramped and uncomfortable), and a paint job. I LOVE the St. James orchestra, however the Balcony is very high up, and can be obstructed in some places. Broadhurst has a great Mezzanine, with fantastic views/sightlines from anywhere. The Shubert, my first Broadway house (Big the Musical - June, 1996), is also quite beautiful. Updated On: 4/18/04 at 02:36 AM

Posted: 4/18/04 at 10:26amThe problem with the Gershwin is that it feels so cold and daunting. Maybe it's time to put that old "We'll trade you the Mark Hellinger for the Gershwin" plan into action! But my current favorite Broadway theatre has to be a tie between the Shubert and the Winter Garden.
