Favorite Marquee?

Posted: 4/15/05 at 5:43pmOk boys and girls...I know it's been asked before, but I'm pondering using a Broadway marquee as my desktop background. Any favorites? It could be contemporary or classic. Heck, it could even be a West End marquee....

Most of the ones on Broadway now. I hate the marquees for: Little Women(Ugly), Dirty Rotten Scoundrels (cheap looking), Spamalot (looks like a swap meet meets a strip club meets not funny), All Shook Up (too yellow)...
I quess I enjoy the marquees for Hairspray and Ave Q the most out of the ones out.

Posted: 4/15/05 at 5:55pmThe Winter Garden has such a prominent marquee. You always know what's playing there.

Posted: 4/15/05 at 5:56pmAnyone miss the flag at the Neil Simon for "Hairspray" which was replaced by the giant spray can? I was partial to the flag actually.

and I think the Shubert theater is one of the very few left where you can truly have your name in actual LIGHTS. Real light bulbs. Not the illuminated signs, but real live LIGHTS. ...Barbara Cook mentions this on one of her cds. She is very right.
"Gee I'd like to be, on some marquis, all Twinkling Lights" --as Broadway Baby from FOLLIES says. There is something very exciting about seeing someone's name and lord knows your OWN name in real live light bulbs. It can be a breathtaking part of the theatrical experience. Yes....The Shubert Theater.

The Winter Garden Marquee looks like what I imagined all Broadway marquees looked like when I was a kid.

If you are talking about the actual physical marquee, there is only one clear choice...

That WIZ Marquee is from the one night only performance starring Shani Wallis as Dorothy.

Posted: 4/15/05 at 6:25pmoHHH, I hadn't heard about that. I thought it was a premature one for the revival that has dropped off the radar. The promo art looked similar.

Oh Carl -- I'm just teasing you. Shani Wallis is seventy years old and white. Can you imagine?
Someone doctored that photo a while back when someone asked "What will replace SWEET CHARITY at the Hirschfeld" - this was after the closing notice was put up in Boston.
