and I think the Shubert theater is one of the very few left where you can truly have your name in actual LIGHTS.
I'm pretty sure the Booth and Al Hirschfeld have the actors names in light bulbs also.

Posted: 4/15/05 at 7:46pmI really like the Winter Garden. When I saw Mamma Mia last March, the huge billboard poster above the theater was just awesome. If i were a Broadway producer, I think that's the theater where I'd want my show to be. I like the theater where doubt is now playing too. I love the way the lights and stuff look.

To Stylin
You are not dumb. The Chicago theater has a great Marquee. The old Paradise had a great one as well
My favorite marquee was not a Broadway one but a movie one. The french curve marquee of the NY Paramount. It has been sort of replicated when they renovated the building for the failed WWF restaurant & its reincarnation Hard Rock. Planet Hollywood would have been more appropos having their restaurant in the space previous occupied in the Paramont where Sinatra had his bobbysoxers enthralled

I believe my favorite theatre in the world is Her Majesty's in London. As you can see, there is very little decoration as far as a marquee.

#38re: Favorite Marquee?
Posted: 4/16/05 at 12:16pmMaybe bring Cats back? It would fit so nicely into the Plymouth..or the Booth even!

Posted: 4/16/05 at 12:22pmI agree that the Walter Kerr is the best marquee in town. I have more pictures from that theatre than any other.

Posted: 4/16/05 at 12:33pmMatt, the cool thing about the Walter Kerr's marquee is that it is a virtual replica of the theatre's original 1921 marquee. Jujamcyn obviously went to great care to recreate it when the theatre received its multimillion dollar renovation in 1990. One interesting thing is that from historical photos, the Ambassador had the exact same marquee - the same design and everything. It would be nice if the Shubert Organization gussied up the poor little Ambassador (including restoring the theatre's interior to its original dazzling splendor) whenever Chicago ends its run - but I won't hold my breath.

#43re: Favorite Marquee?
Posted: 4/16/05 at 2:48pmI miss Les Miz being at the Palace. It's such a nice theater a magnificant looking. Then they had to move it to the Queen's which at the end of the street and much smaller. Grrrr.
