re: Favorite Mental Breakdown Song

Love "I'm Breaking Down" from FALSETTOS

Also, VIOLET has a great climax number where she finds out she can't be healed by the preacher: "Raise Me Up reprise" into "Look At Me." Very stirring.

A funny breakdown song is "Old Fashioned Love Story" from Lippas Wild Party.

I can't believe no one's said Judas' Death from Jesus Christ Superstar.

Anyone who doesn't like that show (and I'm not exactly a huge fan) should listen to the Ben Vereen recording (OBC). He's pretty brilliant, especially in that number.

re: Favorite Mental Breakdown Song

People mentioned most of the major SOndheim, etc, ones but some I didn't see listed....

Simple in Anyone Can Whistle (surely this counts?)
Gun Song and Booth's song in Assassins
Umm one of the later pieces in Passion (hahah I'm not really good at the official names of songs for much of Passion)
ALOT of LaChiusa in general but like much of the last half of Marie Christine and Wild Party.

I'm thinking there has to be one from Kiss of the Spider WOman but...

Bride's Lament definitely for me. It's hilarious.
And on a sadder note, The Light in the Piazza. as someone earlier said, it's full of 'them'

re: Favorite Mental Breakdown Song

1. The Judge's Return - Sweeney Todd

2. I Can't Do It Alone- Chicago

3. Do You Know what It's Like - Zanna, Don't!

4. One Step - Songs For A New World

5. Once Upon A Time/Cross/Absolution/No Voice - Bare

I kind of consider everything after Once Upon a huge breakdown just because its so emotional.

Three Bedroom House - BATBOY!
"Now she wants to know WHY, if I'm so fabulous, I would WANT to take care of her child.....I answer with as much filigree and insouciance as I can muster, trying to slightly cock my head like Snow White listening to the animals. She, in turn, is aiming for more of a Diane-Sawyer-pose, looking for answers which will confirm that I am not there to steal her husband, jewelry, friends, or child. In that order." The Nanny Diaries

re: Favorite Mental Breakdown Song

...and I am telling you... is the ultimate in breakdown songs.

"There's a Fine Fine Line" is not really a mental breakdown song but it is more of a fed up/broke down song.

Sarabya Santa is a meltdown song too
"Whenever I get gloomy with the state of the world, I think about the arrivals gate at Heathrow Airport. General opinion's starting to make out that we live in a world of hatred and greed, but I don't see that. It seems to me that love is everywhere. Often it's not particularly dignified or newsworthy, but it's always there - fathers and sons, mothers and daughters, husbands and wives, boyfriends, girlfriends, old friends. When the planes hit the Twin Towers, as far as I know none of the phone calls from the people on board were messages of hate or revenge - they were all messages of love. If you look for it, I've got a sneaky feeling you'll find that love actually is all around."
