i was just in a production of Seussical and Oh the Thinks You Can Think is now one of my favorite opening numbers, very energetic
another vote 4 Into The Woods
clasically speaking a good opening= "Another Op'nin' another show"
from kiss me kate.
i agree with heart and music from a new brain.
cant help but say defying gravity for a 1st act ending
Dont rain on my parade- also a good act 1 ending.
seasons of love act 2 opening.
I think that "Let the Sunshine In" from HAIR would make great Act One Finale.
I love FootlooseOn Any Sunday from Footloose, but it's not all that great without great choreography. I also vote for Wilkomen from Cabaret!

Having recently heard it for the first time, I really like the opening to Dreamgirls. I'm guessing the "opening" of that show ends after "Move."
I love when the Dreamettes overlap the Stepp Sisters where they sing "Move, move, move, move" over "I'm looking for something baby"

I'm going to third the Assassins opening number, but I think my favorite is "Scrap" from the Full Monty, which no one has mentioned. Maybe it's too specific to the show.
I am not quite sure if this would be considered an opening number or an overture because i cant really remember specifically what follows it but I thoroughly was thrilled with the opening to the Ill-fated "Dance of the Vampires." I was very impressed with how they opened that show. Probably one of the show's only saving music quality was its overture.
I think an amazing 1st Act closer is Alive from Jekyll and Hyde.
