Posted: 1/5/04 at 8:50pmThe fact that its sooo depressing, grotesque, and just plain nasty, of course! Actually, I have no idea, the demonic charater of Sweeney just pulls me into the story and the music. And the fact that there actually was a demon barber on Fleet Street named Sweeney Todd makes it all the more exciting for me.

Here is my order of preference:
WEST SIDE STORY
GYPSY
A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC
FOLLIES
A FUNNY THING...FORUM
COMPANY
SWEENEY TODD
PASSION
INTO THE WOODS
MERRILY WE ROLL ALONG
ANYONE CAN WHISTLE
EVENING PRIMROSE
DO I HEAR A WALTZ
PACIFIC OVERATURS
SUNDAY IN THE PARK
ASSASSINS (It's growing on me & may easily overtake SUNDAY)
Favorite collections for me are
SONDHEIM A MUSICAL TRIBUTE (A must; recorded live 3/11/73 live on stage of the Shubert Theatre on the set of NIGHT MUSIC. This is the ultimate early Sondheim collection--classic songs and classy performers; other compilations pale much by comparison)
SIBE BY SIDE BY SONDHEIM*
Oh, and only ORIGINAL BROADWAY & *LONDON CASTS, PLEASE.

Has anyone tried singing "A Weekend in the Country" with a group of friends while riding the subway? Do try...

Passion is my favorite.
I think Sweeney Todd is his best score, though.
But Into the Woods would be my second favorite.

orcha...I played SUNDAY endlessly for quite a time when it first premiered but in the context of his work it is not high on my list.
I was actually thinking that my opinion of Mandy has no place in my assessment of Sondheim's work. So I was going to delete that reference. Thanks for reminding me.
I still dislike Mandy's affected singing style but that's immaterial to my personal opinion about Sondheim's score. It's my thought that other work of his work is far superior.
Cheers! Off to see THE FORSYTE SAGA, the original.

Posted: 1/7/04 at 12:10amSunday In the Park With George is my favorite, but Into the Woods is proving to be the only musical I have been in that I don't get tired of toward the end of rehearsals... oh and if you don't have respect for an actor who has been in a Sondheim, try singing Last Midnight with the full orchestra-can we say 8 different keys and modes as the same time!

I just listened again to
SONDHEIM A MUSICAL TRIBUTE
thanks to this message thread.
What a GREAT evening! This was recorded just two weeks after the opening of A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC. All of the performers were in Sondheim shows. This was the first of any Sondheim retrospectives, and I believe, of any musical theatre composer/lyricist.
If you haven't heard this, or haven't heard it a long while, do yourself a big favor and have a listen. It's joyous, it's wonderful, it's LIVE!
