I'm a rather large fan of Kerry Butler's, actually.

And Chenoweth's belting voice isn't half bad, either.

First off, the post was not dumb - the comment was. People said Idina even though you said not to...

If people want to like her, let them. And what does Idina belting have to do with Wicked - she WAS in other shows (yes, I know many people only know her from Wicked...)

Oh, Mary Bond Davis is good to - but I stand by MARICEL and SIMONE!

I can't believe no one has said Linda Eder yet. I suppose she's not so much theatre intensive, but still, a great belter.

A lot of people are saying Alice Ripley (kind of ironic since she so graciously filled in for Linda Eder when she couldn't perform one of her solo concerts). I don't think I've ever really heard Alice belt at her best. Whenever I hear her, she always sounds older than she is, more warbly than powerful. Can someone tell me something of hers I can listen to so that I can hear her at her best. Come to think of it, I have the Maury Yeston Songbook CD, and she sounds great on 'Call From the Vatican', although it seems like she really saves her total belt for only very specific parts of the song.

Anyway, besides Linda Eder, and sadly not theatre related, Kelly Clarkson and Mariah Carey both have undeniably astounding belts. Whether or not you like their music, you have to admit.

And last but not least, Patti LaBelle. She's belted higher than anyone I've ever heard (a B-flat on her song, "When You've Been Blessed"), and there's such power and passion in her voice.

Caleb, much of Alice's extraordinary belting isn't captured on recordings... which is too bad. I was lucky enough to hear her in Little Shop and Tell Me On a Sunday as well as several NYC concerts lately. I've also heard her sing astonishing versions of Broadway Baby and Meadowlark (can't wait for the production of The Baker's Wife this spring!)

Recording-wise I would say "She's Gone" from Unsuspecting hearts shows Alice at her finest. I also thikn "Celebrate" from Angels, Punks, & Raging Queens and "Touch Me" from Rocky Horror shows her belting off. Much of Side Show captures it as well... She knows when to blow off the roof and when to save it up!

Glad to see more men are getting mentioned! They can belt too!
Hunter's great and even though he doesn't belt high notes out in The Producers he still gives a great performance (and he surely upstaged Kerry Butler in Little Shop). It looks like he won't be belting high notes out in his next gig either. Playbill reports he'll be in a play at the Kennedy center.

At least he keeps working!

bwayboy - I'm seeing The Producers next week... yay! The play sounds like a great opportunity for him (and hey, the Kennedy Center is much closer to where I live, so I'm happy)
