What's your favorite torch song? I love love love "No man left for me" from the Will Rogers Follies. I don't like Dee Hoty..but I still adore the song!

"Bill" from SHOWBOAT. I really love the recording of Ava Gardner. (I'll never know why she was dubbed in the film - I think her actual singing voice fits Julie a great deal better)
I don't know if it's technically a torch song, but "Loosing My Mind" from FOLLIES and "Not a Day Goes By" from MERRILY. Amazing.
Not exactly a torch either, but it's my
'commandeered' torch song for the board...
Here's to the posters who post--
Everybody laugh.
Lounging in their undies
And planning a revival
For their own behalf.
Off to Virgin records,
'Cause there's a signing,
Complaining their misquoted
And feeling grim,
'Cause they've been sitting
Choosing an avatar.
Does anyone give a crap?
I'll post to that.
And here's to the posters who are smart--
Aren't they a gas?
Rushing to correct others missteps
Hoping they'll impress.
Another long exhausting day,
Another silly writer,
A quick retort, a reference book,
Perhaps some satire.
I'll post to that.
And one for satire!
And here's to the posters who play rough--
Aren't they too much?
Keeping court but clutching
A google search,
Just to use their sword.
The ones who cling to IBDB,
And pat their backs on their desk stools,
Too busy to know that they're fools.
Aren't they such gems?
I'll post to them!
Let's all post to them!
And here's to the posters who just read--
Aren't they the best?
When they get the nerve,
They look for the verbs,
just to get some press.
Another chance to learn something new,
To read a brilliant zinger,
Another reason not to think,
Words from other fingers.
Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhh!
I'll post to that.
So here's to the posters on the Net--
Everybody tries.
Look into their names,
And you'll see what they know:
Everybody dies.
A toast to that invisible crew,
The wannabe's wanting their due.
Let's hear it for the posters who post--
Everybody critize!
Critize!
Critize! Critize! Critize! Critize! Critize! Critize! Critize!
Critize!

"Losing My Mind" (specifically performed by Dorothy Loudon)
"Ain't Got No Tears Left" from On The Town, Donna Murphy's rendition is so powerful.
Yo cheno...why the hoty hate?
She belts the hell out of that song, and is pretty much tops in my book!

WHY WAS I BORN?
LOSING MY MIND
TIME HEALS EVERYTHING
Justme2~ It's just I saw another production of the show and I like the woman who was Betty in that production...I'm not trying to agrivate people here..Jut giving my opinion! *Big Smile*
Time Heals Everything is it for me.
For me its its gotta be "Cry Me River" its gorgeous and a fabulous song
Since I'm assuming we're just talking about torch songs from shows, I'd have to say
With Every Breath I Take from City of Angels. Love Kay McClelland in that whole show, but that song is torchy perfection. Dee Hoty (who I love) is also fantastic in that show.
And I agree with many of the songs already listed. Big fan of Not A Day Goes By, Losing My Mind, Time Heals Everything, and The Man That Got Away.

As Long As He Needs Me from Oliver!
Mine will always be MY MAN, with CRY ME A RIVER and MAN THAT GOT AWAY close behind it.
I second the "The Man That Got Away" love. I can really only listen to Judy sing it, though, which is probably how it should be. Um. Also, "Do it Again", which fortunately, I CAN listen to other singers besides Judy perform. (Not that I prefer their versions or anything, but that's besides the point.)
I feel REALLY dumb here...what the heck is a torch song? Is it like a song of triumph? Or a lament?

aside from judy -- who cannot be matched --
i love Blues In The Night as sung by Ann Hampton Callaway. She wipes the floor with anyone singing today.
this cd is being released on 8/22/06. i have a promo copy and it is STUNNING.
Oh WOW. I love "Blues in the Night" like crazy. Except I feel like it's another one of those songs I need to learn to like other people besides Judy performing.

I'm going with the already named "As long as he needs me", "With every breath I take". And I'd add: "Blame it on a summer night" from Rags.
