Favourite books on directing?

A Director Prepares by Anne Bogart - great theoretical book on directing and storytelling

The Empty Space by Peter Brook - great theoretical book on theatre itself. Deeply inspiring.

The Collaborative Habit by Twyla Tharp - the 2nd in a series, after The Creative Habit, which is also a great book on building a technique to find inspiration and prepare work. The Collaborative Habitis filled with specific, hard-won advice on collaborating wtih a variety of roles and institutions.

Conversations with Anne by Anne Bogart - interviewing dozens of successful director with differing aesthetics

Favourite books on directing?

In addition to the books by Clurman and William Ball, I recommend:

Thinking Like A Director A Practical Handbook by Michael Bloom

The Director's Companion by Mel Shapiro

Creating Life On Stage A Director's Approach to Working with Actors by Marshall W. Mason

It's not about the craft of directing, but Backwards & Forwards A Technical Manual for Reading Plays by David Ball is very good.

Scott Miller's books (From Assassins to West Side Story, Deconstructing Harold Hill, & a few others) are great for the specific shows they cover - about 10-12 shows per book
