Having seen almost all the plays this year, is there anyone that even compares to Tony Shalhoub's heartbreaking performance in GOLDEN BOY??
This is the ONE race this year that I really hope doesn't get missed because the show is closed... I thought he was just stunningly moving.

Will Bill Magnussen's six-pack (in Vanya) take this one?

While I didn't get to see all of the plays this fall, and still have a few this spring I haven't yet seen... I'm really glad you called out Tony Shalhoub. Because, boy, what a performance he gave… Definitely one that I intend to remember when I make my (imaginary) ballot.

Words don't deserve that kind of malarkey. They're innocent, neutral, precise, standing for this, describing that, meaning the other, so if you look after them you can build bridges across incomprehension and chaos. But when they get their corners knocked off, they're no good anymore…I don't think writers are sacred, but words are. They deserve respect. If you get the right ones in the right order, you can nudge the world a little.

I think Jeremy Shamos (The Assembled Parties), Tom Sturridge (Orphans), Lewis J. Stadlen (The Nance), and Madison Dirks (Virginia Woolf) have potential.

"You travel alone because other people are only there to remind you how much that hook hurts that we all bit down on. Wait for that one day we can bite free and get back out there in space where we belong, sail back over water, over skies, into space, the hook finally out of our mouths and we wander back out there in space spawning to other planets never to return hurrah to earth and we'll look back and can't even see these lives here anymore. Only the taste of blood to remind us we ever existed. The earth is small. We're gone. We're dead. We're safe." -John Guare, Landscape of the Body

I love Shamos and would watch him in anything, but that first act was really an act of swimming upstream for him and he didn't quite make it work all the way for me. I haven't seen the Nance yet. Tom Sturridge really was a revelation, and as of now the only competition Shalhoub has for my (imaginary) vote.

I also have yet to see Lucky Guy and imagine there's some nominees to be found in that cast. I bet Shamos gets a nod, Dirks too (that whole cast deserves nods).

I thought Sturridge was as phony as you can get--drama school acting, a bag of tricks--but as Brantley wrote, it's an awards role.

Shaloub was shattering, but he was also in an ensemble show, and a long-closed one. I hope he's remembered but wouldn't be surprised if he wasn't.

Shamos is well-liked and was well-reviewed. I think he will be nominated.

Stadlen was singled out in many reviews of The Nance. I think he'll get a nomination as well.

I don't think there is a clear favorite as of right now.

Other possible contenders, depending on how the wind blows: Bobby Cannavale (Glengarry Glen Ross), Courtney B. Vance (Lucky Guy), Patrick Page (Cyrano de Bergerac), Reed Birney (Picnic), Ciarán Hinds (Cat on a Hot Tin Roof), Dan Stevens (The Heiress).

Shalhoub was beautiful in GOLDEN BOY, but my favorite scene and my favorite performance in the play was Danny Burstein's. That scene where he massaged and pumped up his boxer was heartbreaking and amazing. I often think back on it as my favorite moment of the season.
Since GOLDEN BOY has closed I don't expect either of them to be nominated. I think Bill Magnussen will win it no matter who else is nominated.
Having seen all the plays this season, IMHO, it should be:

BURSTEIN
MAGNUSSEN
SHALHOUB
SHAMOS
STADLEN

Also, I am 100% Cuba Gooding should not be in the mix. Wowza. Embarrassing.

I'm not sure Jeremy Shamos will be ruled featured. He's on stage for most of the play. Also, if anyone is getting nominated for The Nance, it's Orsini. My money is on:

KIND
ORSINI
MAGNUSSEN
SHALHOUB
STURRIDGE
