Fences Revival Audience

I've been watching some clips of the 2010 revival of Fences, and it sounds like the most obnoxious audience I've ever heard. Every other line they're laughing, or clapping and cheering. And I don't mean they're laughing at jokes, they're laughing at stuff like the "How Come You Ain't Never Liked Me" scene. If you saw the show, was an audience that loud a regular occurrence?

Fences Revival Audience

I distinctly remember one of the older white ushers at the Cort making a super racist comment to me about how "these people don't know how to behave at the theater."

Fences Revival Audience

I wasn't saying they were obnoxious because it was a black audience. They were obnoxious because they were laughing and clapping so hard you couldn't hear the play. Plenty of the People of Color I've worked in the theater with would have asked for their money back after dealing with that audience.

Fences Revival Audience

All I know is hearing the audience reaction in that clip of Viola's monologue gives me chills. I actually teared up the first time I watched it.

Fences Revival Audience

Yes, it was obnoxious, but it didn't distract me enough to not be blown away by the performances. I still left bowled over by the entire production.
