Was not that long ago that almost every noted film director tried his/her hand (with varying success) at a musical, such as Milos Forman, Scorcese (sorta), John Huston, etc.
Now, we have lightweights like Joel Schumacher and Chris Columbus doing them, and Rob Marshall putting them through his repeated "all in his/her mind" filter.
What other established directors should give it a whirl? I'd love to see Tarantino or Mendes (with his stage background) or Fincher helm a musical... Others?
(I'd thought this before about TIm Burton, and am in the camp that thinks he did a pretty admirable job with "Sweeney Todd.")
Baz Luhrmann has shown he can construct what is arguably a jukebox musical (Moulin Rouge, as if I needed to clarify that) and I'd like to see what he can do with a more established piece. We may soon get the opportunity, as Andrew Lloyd Webber stated in his article on beating prostate cancer that Baz was in meetings with Tim Rice and himself about a potential Jesus Christ Superstar remake.
David Fincher has expressed interest in doing a musical. He's actually a huge Bob Fosse fan.

Ooooh... Fincher is a very exciting name to throw around... Makes me wish he'd revisit Fight Club... The Musical!
Spike Lee was once attached to do the film of RENT. He was even auditioning actors at one point, including Raul Esparza and Justin Timberlake. One wonders.
I also think Spielberg is an ideal director for a musical. RAGTIME, maybe?
DeNiro, who produced Rent the movie, also did try to get Scorsese to direct but Scorsese wasn't either interested or just preferred to finally do the projects he long wanted at the time.
Sam Mendes was initially attached to Sweeney Todd with I believe Meryl Streep and Russell Crowe in the leads but soon the rights went to Tim Burton.
I would love Fincher to do a musical.
The story I got on what I call "Martin Scorsese's Rent" is that he looked at the material written for it at the time (which I would presume was the first draft of Stephen Chbosky's screenplay, markedly better than the final film) and was unenthusiastic about making it.
many might/will dissagree, but i think Peter Jackson (Lord Of the rings) would be a great man to at least give a try to?
i think so anyway haha
I'd agree re: Peter Jackson. And Spike Lee already had some almost movie-musical numbers in "School Daze" (aside from some "performance" numbers too.)
If he didn't fill it with explosions and more explosions, Michael Bay would be good. His music videos for Meat Loaf in the early Nineties showed that he definitely has a flair for the theatrical and a stylistic sensibility in tune with movie musicals.
Every now and then a rumor floats that Scorsese is going to direct SUNSET BOULEVARD with Liza but it almost instantly evaporates.
