I have a source that claims that Disney is taking another look at bringing Finding Nemo to broadway. The plan would be to use the current park version of the show as a blueprint and expand the score and rewrite the book. HOWEVER it should be stressed this is something planned for way down the road (I.E once they get Hunchback on the boards).

I thought Disney learned with The Little Mermaid that Broadway under the sea just doesn't work.

I really enjoy the theme park Nemo show. Though I hope that they stop making Nemo sound like he is having a sinus attack.

Anyway, I think it could work...if they take their time and really make it look and sound good.

I never thought I'd say this but I'm actually not that upset by this news. But, I'm not sure if there'd be a market for this, really. We'll see, though!

It's a cute, colorful show that's very creative. I own the recording and its a nice score (it is by Avenue Q, Book of Mormon and upcoming Frozen composer Robert Lopez and his wife), and even though its short (only about 40 minutes), it feels very complete. I think its good where it is for right now, but down the road...who knows. Chances are things might speed up if FINDING DORY is a hit.

Yes. A Broadway show running at 40 minutes. Sounds complete to me. Or I'm assuming the "down the road" *is* referencing to changes they will have to inevitably make for Broadway?

I remember seeing the theme park version of this show a very long time ago (I think I actually saw Rachel Potter as Nemo), it was a cute show. The score was good, plus it's by Robert Lopez. It would need a lot of retooling to get in on Broadway though.

I, for one, hope that it's true. I saw the musical last month at Disney and thought it was great! The songs are excellent and it will easily get Best Score. In TBBW is just gorgeous and GWTF is my favorite. But yeah, they need to do major retooling! Make the puppetd less cartoonish and more realistic or remove them altogether, add more songs and extend the songs! JKS needs to be longer. The sceneic design is great too, but I would love it if it looked more like the ocean. The script needs to be bigger, of course. I can see this, at least, get nominated for Best Musical and Best Leading Actress/Actor for Dory and Marlin and wins for Best Score, Costume Design, and Scenic Design :) I give this 2 thumbs up. They can do a lot more with this.

BTW: Gabriel Ebert would be the perfect Crush and i can see Laura Osnes, Kristin Chenoweth, or Sutton Foster as Dory :)

And what's your source? Updated On: 9/18/13 at 09:52 PM

I don't remember much of the theme park show except for the Big Blue World song and that Dory's costume was awful.

I can tell you with absolute certainty this is not true. There are no plans to bring this show to Broadway.

Check out the PaperMill Playhouse's revamped take on the Little Mermaid. They did it SO much better than Broadway, as did the one in the Netherlands(?) or somewhere in Europe. Beautiful renditions of a show that was a total disaster on Broadway.

back in the olden days Disney did used to pilot there productions in the theme parks before pursuing Broadway (ala Beauty and the Beast)even though Park entertainment and Disney Theatrical are now two separate divisions. Wouldn't be surprised. Anne Hamburg, who was the president of creative entertainment at the time, even through around the idea about expanding to Broadway.

When Finding Nemo was in rehearsal at Animal Kingdom it WAS a full two hour show. And, originally, it had been marketed that way. It was going to be something to keep the park open later as the park currently closes at sundown because all the animals go away. So they needed something big to keep the park going. But somewhere along the line the bean counters decided that was too much money and decided to make it run 6 times a day during regular operating hours. So the director, much to the dismay of it's creators, took a red pen and literally slashed the show to pieces. The show that is running now is in NO WAY a reflection of what was originally written. I was not a part of Nemo but during rehearsals a friend who was a part of the show brought home the script and showed it to me. It looked like the script was bleeding. I hope they do give this a full treatment because some of the material that was cut was really fantastic.

I would love to see the original full-length NEMO script or score, even if it never got produced, just to see what might have been.

If they think that it is good enough to go to Broadway, they must have something up their sleeves. It could work, but it could also be a disaster.
