Also, on the stage, Christine is played by older women (usually in her 30's). They are people who have had years and years of vocal training. Emmy is/was only 17 when she filmed Phantom and her voice is not as developed as those women on stage. Did that make any sense?

Emmy sounds fine in that clip, but her acting in it is horrrrrrible. Yes mouthing your own singing must be hard, but she could do a bit better than that.
Gerard sounds great in that bit. Yes he is rough in some parts, but I think his acting will more than cover that.
The only one I worried about now is Emmy.

yeah spider, it did. i know emmy has been singing opera for a long time. she sang at the met when she was 7 i believe... but still, she is only 17... what more do you expect?
i think she also gets better as the movie progresses. i think she did a beautiful job with wishing you were somehow here again... and of course point of no return

Posted: 11/8/04 at 9:53pmYES i know that she was only 17 when they recorded this and YES good for her to sound good (mehh even thats questionable)at 17 but since i am used to a STRONG 30 year old voice THIS christine came as a bit of a shocker. forgive me but in film, or on stage, i just wanna hear someone that can hold their own. thats MY opinion.

And I respect your opinion, Alison. And I also agree with you. I wish they would have gotten someone with a stronger voice but after a while, all the voices grow on you.

Hello everyone. I'm here. It's my birthday and I am SO RIGHT ABOUT EVERYTHING PHANTOM ITS NOT EVEN FUNNY. Question me as long and as hard as you want on any friggin variation on the original story and I can answer it. I have devoted much of my life to this show, this story, these characters. My children shall be named after some of them. I am a PHAN. And there are more out there besides me, don't I know it, but I do not think there is ONE true true PHAN on this post right now.
Gerard Butler CAN. NOT. SING. AT. ALL. I don't give two cents about his acting--haven't seen any yet--but he cannot sing. ERIK, aka THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA, for ALW and those people out there who don't believe he has a name, is SUPPOSED to have the GREATEST VOICE IN THE WORLD. WHY ELSE would Christine fall for the Angel of Music shtick? He has a BEAUTIFUL VOICE, which he HAS TO HAVE to directly parallel his ugliness. He is supposed to have the voice of an angel, and I'm not talking Charlotte Church.
Christine, while, yes, still learning, by the time of Angel of Music, has TRIUMPHED at the gala before all of Parisian society. Emmy would be laughed at. Oh if not laughed at at least politely clapped to and then forgotten. Definitely would not have triumphed. Also, since SO MANY PEOPLE are battling this stupid age thing, Christine is TWENTY. That's TWENTY, people. Not SEVENTEEN. Do you realize that actors nowadays who are 25 play 17 year olds? NO 17 year old plays a 20 year old. That's the way the entertainment business works. The actress doesn't have to be 20, but I'd say she needs to have at least 5 years post-college/vocal/acting education working experience to be able to play her. I have nothing against the girl, but Emmy obviously does not have the voice. Maybe she will in a few years. But not now.
Again, back to Gerard. He is awful. I am so sorry that I am going to spend money on this movie with him in the title role. I wish that I had devoted more time and energy into the Michael Crawford Movie Campaign when it was going on. Erik/The Phantom NEED NOT be young. Ya can't see his face anyway. And besides, he's 50 anyways.
This entire thing is ridiculous. If I didn't already hate Andrew Lloyd Webber, I would hate him now. If years from now, people are going to think of the Phantom and picture THESE TWO, I am going to be MOST upset.
Thank you. Have a nice night. My birthday's almost over and I spent the entire day (7AM til 11PM) teching my show. So I'm not in the mood to argue, but if you make me, I have so much stored up anger from missing my birthday that I promise that I WILL direct it to you.

THANK YOU! the most IMPORTANT and BEAUTIFUL thing about phantom is the music. you screw that up, you screw the whole thing up. you guys who think that gerard is good must not have ears. ERIKs voice is not one you should have to "get used to". it is insulting to the story and its fans (or phans) to cast a man who has never sung before in his life. and by god does it show. so disappointing. Uh no. I happen to like Gerard, that doesn't make me wrong about anything. So I'm a Mizzie not a Phan, I love POTO but I'm not about to go around and say everyone else is wrong because your more overly obsessed with this show than me.

Funny. Haha I liked that. I admit I'm being a little extreme. But I'm RIGHT. And I know it. I'll be mature about anything else--except for Phantom. This movie is just unacceptable by the standards that I have come to expect from the Phantom world. Anyone read Phantom of Manhattan? Don't, if you haven't. I have and it was a horrible experience, probably only a little worse than this movie is going to be.
There are a set of rules one must abide by in order to create something with these characters. ABSOLUTELY no phans that I know would accept this version if it were, say, phan phiction, so why should it be any different.
His one SALVATION IS HIS VOICE, DON'T YOU GET IT?! I know this seems like I'm extreme, but it's a bit ridiculous. I know high schoolers who would be a better Phantom than Gerard Butler.
This has NOTHING either to do with the SHOW. It's a CANON, a WORLD. To mess up something MAJOR like this hurts me--I don't want this to be how people see the characters I have loved for so long. The only one who may come out all right is Raoul--and I dislike Raoul to the extreme.
See? I warned I would bite back.
Prove me wrong. Some one. But so far, Alison R and I are the only voices of reason on this post. You may happen to like Gerard's voice, but is he ANYWHERE close to Angelic? If he started singing would you think 'wow... an ANGEL!'? Umm, I don't think so. I think 'wow... someone make that guy stop'. He's like one of those annoying men on the subway who are awful singers but expect you to give them money anyways.
