First Preview of High Fidelity

Posted: 11/21/06 at 5:51pmI know that, but they're another two shows that aren't so great (POTO more than LM). I'm not a huge fan of measuring everything up to the mega-musical.

Posted: 11/21/06 at 5:54pmI agree with you, but I was using them as like those legendary "works of art that everyone and their mother loves," which isn't true, but I think you know what I mean.

The "Wonderful Love" duet was changed and now its a Rob solo sang to Laura.
And the first Laura song that was changed during the Boston run is no longer in the show at all at that point.

Posted: 11/21/06 at 6:30pmI was as bored as Bree was, not miserable like I was at "Times" but bored. The main problem is, it's basically a romantic comedy and the audience they're going after isn't going to want to see that. And for a premise based on the most elitist music snobs, boy do the songs completely miss the mark. Why does every new show now have to be compared to Wedding Singer?! As I've already said this board aside, that is not something any show would or should want to aspire to comparison wise.

TabooPhan, I never put words in your mouth.
Whenever a show basically sucks, the "reviews" (especially in early previews) on this board all say "Um...the cast is talented, etc."
It wasn't anything to do with what you thought or me putting words into your mouth, just an observation.

Saw the preview last night and shared an anonymous shrug with someone else leaving the theatre. Ironically, both A CHORUS LINE and AVENUE Q were letting out as we exited the Imperial and, well, the people across the street seemed so much happier.
Christian Anderson is amazing, whatever the show -- RENT, AVENUE Q, HIGH FIDELITY, etc. But, and there is always one, while Will Chase is way talented and likeable, he is certainly NOT an "above-the-title, face-on-the-marquee" star. If this is how they wanted to market this show, with the "guy being the thing," why not bring in Neil Patrick Harris or some other semi-dude who does well on celluloid and on stage? Heck, I'd even take one of the younger guys who've cycled through the Billy Flynn role a few blocks north (does Kevin Richardson ring a bell) or the role of Mark Chohen a few blocks south (Drew Lachey anyone?). I don't get it.
This one, sadly and given running costs, may not last as long as the Dylan-Twarp disaster.

Posted: 11/22/06 at 1:06amI'll go into more detail tomorrow, but I suppose I'm one of the only ones who absolutely loved every moment of this musical. Those I was with felt the same way. I wonder if some of it has to do with a generational gap among audience members. The reason why I saw this show - Will Chase - was absolutely phenomenal in every way. Although it may not be the "deepest" show in the world, it's a fun piece with underlying emotion attached to it, which is more than can be said for a lot of "fun" shows currently playing.

Posted: 11/22/06 at 1:16amYeah, I absolutely *loved* this show as well. I was one of the people siamese dream was with. The audience seems to be really into it as well. I'll admit it's not for everyone, but it's just SO fun to watch.

Ugh. The first preview sucked. Will Chase, a very talented man, seemed miscast to me as Rob. I always picture Rob as geeky and esoteric, two things that Mr. Chase is decidely not. He, as well as Jenn Colella, sing very well, but can't act their way out of a paper bag. Only Christian Anderson as Dick has the full package: a great voice, a good part that he utilizes well, and spot-on comedic timing. Somebody find him a real show.
I would've liked to have seen them do more with the exes, like they did in the movie and book. You've got 4 very talented ladies who essentially just stand there and look pretty for two hours. I was happy that the gorgeous and talented Emily Swallow, who stole Measure for Pleasure last season out from under Euan Morton and Michael Stuhlbarg, actually got a song. Whenever she's on stage, you can't take your eyes off of her. She's got a very bright future.

jacobcarguy, the "intimate little film" you speak of runs 1 hour and 55 minutes. Hardly little, if you ask me.
I love the musical. I liked the movie, but after seeing it on stage, I now find the movie slow and plodding. I love John Cusack, but after seeing Will, Cusack seems old, worn, and too disconnected for me. (And I'm not making a remark about anyone's literal age, but rather their performance.)
AC, I think you're nuts. Will is one of the finest actors I have ever seen. Radames, John Lennon, Rob, Roger Davis, businessman on L&O, appearance on Conviction, etc... the man is a chameleon. He has yet to disappoint me.
I loved the show in Boston, EXCEPT for "Wonderful Love," which I thought came too late in the show to be SUCH a ballad, if you know what I mean. Pretty song, wrong time. The highlights (for me) were "It's No Problem," everything Will did, "Conflict Resolution," and the Bruce Springsteen dream sequence. I'm going on Tuesday (for my birthday!), so I'm anxious to see if I agree with the changes.
It's not Shakespeare, and it's not Puccini. But is it worth seeing? Oh, definitely. Fun, energetic, great cast, witty book/lyrics... I love it!
My avatar: Yummy, no?

Posted: 11/22/06 at 5:36pmI thought that the plot needed to be a little smoother. The show starts off really slow with a very strange song. It was funny[ish]. The music wasnt great, like really wasnt great. The scenery was outstanding though and it had a great cast. i saw it last night and am not sure if I liked it.

I played lotto tonight. 21 seats are available and I would say there was about 30 people there.
I went in, expecting to not like the show only because I had never seen the movie and hadn't heard good things. I really enjoyed it. The sets are amazing, so fun the way they transition from place to place.
I really liked Will Chase. I think he has a quality about him that is very endearing and I like the way he talks to the audience, very familiar. Jenn Colella is slightly underused, vocally, but they added rifts into the song after bows for her. It was a new change, implemented tonight.
I really enjoyed Emily Swallows and Christian Anderson - he is definitely a highlight as is the guy that plays Bruce. I think Christian Anderson is the highlight of the show, but I do think the cast is very strong.
The ensemble works very well together. Andrew Call showcases some excellent dancing skills and Matt Caplan in a mohawk - not something to be missed.
I enjoyed it. Yes, it is fluff, but it is fun and it has heart. Sadly, people are right. The kind of audience this show attracts is not coming for heart. So, I don't know how long it will last, but I think it's worth seeing once.
