So I just got back from the first preview (I believe) of High Fidelity. There's some awesome talent, great jokes, and catchy songs. It's no masterpiece (but then again, what show is in previews?). If you go into it not expecting anything existential or profound, you'll probably at least have a good time.
PS- It's going to be compared to Wedding Singer... a lot...

Posted: 11/21/06 at 3:07amI too was there at the first preview, with TabooPhan no less haha. I really enjoyed it, its a 90's Wedding Singer in a way. They use some of the same methods as Wedding Singer does. I don't know if that makes sense but I don't want to ruin it for people. But there is so much talent in this cast and there are some really funny parts and I think that it can go far. This is the first preview after all but it got amazing reception from the audience which I think is a good sign but we shall see. I wish it all the luck in the world.

Ah, crap. Don't compare it to Wedding Singer... I wanted to enjoy this show. *sigh*
It has a lotto?... maybe I'll just judge for myself.

Did they keep that hilarious "Conflict Resolution" scene in the second act?

#6re: First Preview of High Fidelity
Posted: 11/21/06 at 7:53amWhen I saw it in Boston. I thought it reminded me of the WS. But with alot better music and no dancing. I think the music is the strong suit of this show. And the cast is also awesome. I'm hoping word of mouth spreads about this show. I love this show..........

Posted: 11/21/06 at 9:10amThey've made a LOT of good changes since boston, and yes, the conflict resolution is still in there. the show is a good time, but don't expect anything Spring Awakening-esque, obviously. The talent is great; Rachel Stern was definitely a needed player in the show; the music is catchy, but I'm not sure if I feel compelled to go back again..

I was blessed with comps to the show for the first preview, and I am so happy I didn't have to pay!
All the clever gems are buried soooo deep in Act II that once you arrive at them, it's hard to care. The lyrics are comically pedestrian. However, Christian Anderson is wonderful. He walks away with the show in Act II. Jeb Brown. I am not a fan.
Not an awful show, but one that sort of plods through its 2:10 running time, and leaves us asking, "Why did they make this intimate little film into a musical?"
To quote the show, I say it has a "9 percent chance" at a long run in NY.

Posted: 11/21/06 at 9:23amI agree about the difference from Boston, the changes have really improved the show. I liked it enough in Boston but now I think its a hundred times better. I don't really like the comparisons to the Wedding Singer because (and I like WS) I think that will make people think cheesey music and a lot of dance numbers, which it definitely isn't. The cast is fantastic, the show is really funny, and the music is one of its strongest points. I'd say just see it without having the WS mindset.

There is nothing wrong with comparing it to THE WEDDING SINGER- which is an AWESOME show- but from the music I have heard and the story line, IMO, I can't really see how it would compare...
I wish this show and it's cast well
I hope I get a chance to see/hear it.

Posted: 11/21/06 at 10:53amI think the music is this show's problem. It is a show about music snobs... people who would never listen to the mediocre, pedestrian score of this musical. I'd say a nine-percent chance is being generous. I hope they did some work on Act Two since Boston.

Whenever someone comes back from a show saying "There's some awesome talent, great jokes, and catchy songs. It's no masterpiece (but then again, what show is in previews?). If you go into it not expecting anything existential or profound, you'll probably at least have a good time", you might as well just say it sucks. They're really the same thing.
And if it's going to be compared to THE WEDDING SINGER, that can't be a good thing.
I will try seeing it within the month. I have a feeling it won't last too long.

I was there with rup last night and am only speaking for myself, but I thought it was painfully dull. I never thought this was a piece that needed a musical adaptation, that being said, it's very underwhelming and that's the worst thing a show can be. The cast is fine, giving it their all but the songs and especially the lyrics are almost laughably childish. You're not left with any sort of concrete resolution at the end and the "best" thing about it was the sets, again not a good thing. It was a heavily papered crowd so of course, they were far more enthusiastic than a "real" crowd would have been. Sorry, it did nothing for me and I don't see a very long run for this show. It ran 2:10 and I felt every minute of it.

Well, Munk, everyone is entitled to their opinion. However, you are not entitled to putting words in my mouth, and I never once implied that the show sucked.
"There's some awesome talent, great jokes, and catchy songs."
-This OBVIOUSLY suggests that I hated it.
"It's no masterpiece (but then again, what show is in previews?). If you go into it not expecting anything existential or profound, you'll probably at least have a good time"
-hmmmm... still not seeing the "show sucking" part, but that's just me... Actually, I think I BLATANTLY said that if you don't go in expecting anything along the lines of Streetcar, you'll probably enjoy yourself.
I am so sick of message boards being a vehicle for snotty, pretentious jerks. Don't twist around what I said and don't insult a show you haven't seen. If you have an opinion, I am more than happy to hear it; but if you don't have one, don't reword (and I use that term loosely, as your way with words was slightly unimpressive)mine to make it seem like you do. If you can't do that, I would ask you not to respond to my posts.

I miss this show. When I saw it, I came out feeling happy. It's a fun show. No, it's not a Les Mis or Phantom, but it's not meant to be. I can't remember that many shows that have made me just feel happy. I mean, I've come out of shows with a feeling giddy, but never with a happiness that lasted me as long as High Fidelity. I know that sounds weird and doesn't make sense, seeing as it isn't even close to being my favorite show, but whatever.
Can someone tell me what Laura' first song is, or how they introduce her? That got changed in the middle of the Boston run and I wanted to know if it was changed again. And what about Wonderful Love and the final song? I know those were being talked about.

"No, it's not a Les Mis or Phantom" ...
that hurts my soul.
#24re: First Preview of High Fidelity
