Are any of the people here that are bitching about the concept or the smaller orchestrations familiar with a show called Threepenny Opera? Or Bertolt Brecht and Kurt Weill? Give it a listen. This concept to me sounds great! Throw it in the audiences face and make it ugly, to boot!

So, now lets talk about Ellen Greene or Cyndi Lauper as Lovett...make her gritty and dirty and real.

PEACE.

The reason the CARRIE metaphor doesn't work is because CARRIE wasn't just bad in production: it was a bad show, hands down. With SWEENEY TODD, even if the production is bad (which I seriously doubt it will be), the show's ridiculously strong. Comparing SWEENEY TODD and CARRIE is like comparing a computer and a Hershey's syrup bottle. It doesn't work.

If I want to see the original production, I'll watch the DVD. If I even want to see the concert version, I'll watch the DVD. I do this a lot. But if I want to see a new take on it, I'll go to see it on Broadway (which I'll do, as well).

^ I agree.

It's almost like since Carrie was such a HUGE flop, people love to praise it.

Honestly, who in their right mind would compare Sweeney to Carrie? Brilliant materpiece and one of the biggest flops ever.

Yes Sondheim wrote Sweeney to be done small.

however, lets see:

93 London Sweeney- Also done small. Said to be Sondheims favorite production.

First Bway Revival- Very small (orchestra was 3 synths...yuck)

after many many small productions have been done, I think it is a bit silly we keep saying "its time to do the show like sondheim intended it to be done!...small and scary"...hate to break it, but its been done.

Im no fan of this concept, or this cast..(michael cerveris happens to be my least favorite male broadway performer.)...however I will say that im glad Sweeney is back...in ANY way. Even if the concept makes me a little pissed.

I dont know about you all, but Im ready for a production that would be smaller than the Prince staging...but larger than the recent and current productions. A full orchestra, a nice new set concept, new direction. Im still sad they didnt transfer the Kennedy Center Sweeney. Sigh

"I don't really get the ending, all i can go with is when after several months,Judith saw Pat sang, and later she kissed him on the toilet, after that the story back to where Pat went down from the stage after he'd sung, and he went to the italian lady.I just don't get it,what Judith exatcly meant when he kissed Pat that she had seen, and did Pat end up together with The Italian Lady? Please help me,thank u very much!" Quote from someone on IMDB in reference to a movie he/she didn't understand. Such grammar!
