Anyone going to THE KING AND I tonight? Or, FUN HOME? I've never been to a performance immediately following a big TONY win. I'd imagine TKAI will be electrifying - being that Kelli finally won, Ruthie Ann Miles won and not to mention, best revival. I'd love to hear how the audience reacts! If anyone goes, please report back :)
"Tony Tuesday" is one of my favorite traditions.
I've found the performance to have an extra sparkle following a Tony win.
. . . and tonight's sparkle at KING & I did NOT disappoint.
I have goosebumps thinking about it.
Kelli's entrance was a thrill. The applause and cheers and enthusiasm and standing ovation (partial - not the entire theatre) were glorious. She gave a couple of little bows, mostly to stop the applause so the show could go on. You could just see the SMILE on her face. She was beaming. As was Ted Sperling, who was overjoyed at the reaction and kept turning around to look at the audience. I admit to getting teary-eyed from joy.
Ruthie Ann Miles also received enthusiastic entrance applause (her scene doesn't 'break' as easily, so it was a little shorter).
At the end, during curtain calls, Ken Watanabe took both of their hands and lifted them up into the air as he smiled with that same congratulatory love and enthusiasm that he showed when they won on Sunday night. He was giddy with happiness for them, and hugged Kelli as the applause went on and on and on.
I've always loved "Tony Tuesday".
Tonight's was perfect.
That makes me so happy! I've always loved seeing shows on Tony Sunday, they always seem to have so much anticipatory excitement. But I may need to make Tony Tuesday a tradition!
That made me a little teary just reading it! So wonderful.
Thank you for posting about TKAI post Tony's. I am so thrilled for Kelli, I am still smiling thinking about it!
Tony Tuesday at On The Town - At the Slam-Bang Club Jackie Hoffman
sang "Getting to Know You, Getting to know all about you - dammit!"
Christian Borle performed Monday at the Bombshell concert after winning the Tony on Sunday. He got a great reception and after Debra Messing congratulated him, he said, "Well, it doesn't suck, that's for sure." The crowd loved him.
I'm here on my trip and started my week off with Fun Home last night. We weren't let into the theater until around 7:20 (the show starts at 7) because there were technical difficulties. I felt kind bad for some reason since it was their first show and the middle lift/elevator was pretty much broken. The crew had to carry the "Changing My Major" bed in, which was awkward since some of them stayed on the corners of the stage to see if it was put in the right spot. But other than that, the show was fantastic and the energy from the audience was great. Michael got 15 second entrance applause and Sydney also got entrance applause. The crowd was crazy after "Ring of Keys". It was great night and Jeanine gave a speech at the end (which Broadwayworld already has posted) and it was fun to cheer her on.
I'm SO glad you were there to see Kelli's Tony Tuesday.
We're going to American in Paris for "Tony Friday." Back when I bought the tickets, I had no idea that Fun Home would beat it out for Best Musical.
Did anyone see Fun Home last night?
The post above yours? (or do you have Les Wickedly blocked?)

Thanks everyone for sharing your "Tony Tuesday" experiences!!! The King and I - ahhh so happy for Kelli!! Sounds like a thrilling performance! Got goosebumps just reading it. Plus, hearing the audio posted in the other thread; her entrance applause, Wow!
Fun Home sounds like a great experience as well; unfortunate they had those issues but glad to hear the audience was great!!
Lol - On The Town. Sounds like Jackie's taking it well ![]()
Anyone go to Something Rotten on Tuesday? Curious if anything special happened for Christian at the show?
I was just coming on to ask if anyone was at Something Rotten! I haven't seen the show yell, but I'm assuming "Will Power" is his first appearance, which would then make it easy for there to be a really great moment.

HA HA HA HA HAAAA! Love it! What was the audience's reaction? At this time, imagine OTT's audience is made up largely of out of towners?
Love that she did that!

I'm curious to hear about Something Rotten, too. Although "Will Power" really is the first big moment, there's a perfect cameo in the opening that would also let the cast give a little acknowledgement.

I was at AAIP last night. Despite having been beaten for best musical, it was an electric audience.

I was also there for TKAI yesterday. It was just magical. Besides the show being brilliant, the applause when Kelli came out was deafening. I was a bit worried when I saw the audience was mainly older people that were dressed really well and kids so they may not show much enthusiasm, but I was glad I was wrong. The applause lasted for about a minute before they continued and Kelli was beaming. You could tell she broke character for a moment and just fed on the applause. Her smile at that moment while she's at the bow of the ship is an image that will stay in my memory forever. Just a magical moment.
Again, Ruthie Ann Miles got a nice applause but as has already been pointed out, her entrance doesn't give much of an opening for applause.
During the curtain call was when she received a great hand. And of course, Kelli received another rousing applause. Ken was probably the proudest person in that room when he lifted both of their hands into the air. The laughed and smiled and it was fantastic. I'm soo glad I got to experience it. This is my 3rd Tony tuesday. I was there the Tuesday for Bernadette Peters in Gypsy (although no win) and Angela Lansbury in Blithe Spirit (she won featured actress). I think I'll have to make it an annual tradition.
I was there Tuesday night for THE KING AND I as well, it's too bad I didn't get to meet you all for I had to go home with my friends. I posted my thoughts on the performance on THE KING AND I reviews thread.
Just seeing such strong enthusiasm for Kelli and Ruthie were such rare treats that night, won't forget it anytime soon in my life.
