We were told 2008 by the folks at MTI, but maybe since Pioneer is in Utah (and we're in Chicago), they gave them the rights early.

Theatres in far-flung locations can often get rights earlier than those near major cities (where a tour might come though).

Community theatres here in Australia have been doing Les Mis for 10 or so years...and doing very well from it ($$$). What generally happens is that when there is not a major professional production on they release the rights for a limited period, say two years then withdraw them after that for a while to create a demand. Then release them again. What you get is a flurry of activity where every other major amateur company is doing Les Miserables. They all want to do it as generally the seasons sell out.

The rights haven't been released before now because of the national tour. Now that the tour is shuttering, there is no reason to not release the rights.

Far-flung? I don't think the Pioneer Theatre Company is that far from Salt Lake, though. (Of course, the tour isn't going by there before it closes...)

The show remains a favorite for Utah audiences, who since 1991 have sold out eight Salt Lake City runs of the national tour, according to John Ballard, president of the local theatrical office of Live Nation, the entertainment division that spun off from corporate conglomerate Clear Channel last November.

We've sold more tickets per capita of 'Les Miz' than any other market in the country," says Ballard, noting that renowned British producer Cameron Mackintosh "knows very well where Salt Lake City is."

And alterego, sorry! I'd forgotten Oz and NZ had the rights for a while (I think Canada did, too). I'm going to edit the subject header, not that it'll help.

That's what I assumed originally, but I kind of figured they would hold the right until the Broadway engagement finishes.

"Far-Flung" as in not too close to NYC, Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Washington D.C., Miami.

There is no conflict of interest for the producers. As a resident of Salt Lake City (and Pioneer Theatre Company is housed on the University of Utah campus, right in Salt Lake City) I can tell you that the interest in this show is still at a fever-pitch, despite a gajillion high school productions and 8 visits by the touring company. And with our distance from NYC we're hardly a threat to the market out there.

This has been getting major press already. Pioneer Theatre was one of the first to do BATB regionally as well, and there's still that talk of them heading up a Broadway-bound production of Paint Your Wagon (worst. idea. ever.), so the company is really growing into their status as a regional theatre.

I heard 2009 from MTI and they said it could be longer. But obviously there was a miscommunication.

Bump because it appears the Music Box Players in Swoyersville, Pa will also tackle Les Miz...

They’ve also got big plans for 2007, including “Les Miserables,” “The Full Monty,” “How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying” and “She Loves Me”.
