Philip Casnoff, star of famous flops Shogun, Chess, and Rockabye Hamlet will succeed Huey Lewis as Billy Flynn, beginning January 15. He is playing the role through March 25, opposite Bebe Neuworth.

I have to get him to sign my Shogun playbill and my Chess CD cover. Definitely seeing this show again with him. Thanks for the info!!!
Maybe I can ask him about when he got injured during a press preview of Shogun (I think the set fell on him or something like that)

Posted: 12/14/06 at 3:47pmI have to say, he was terrible in both Chess and Shogun, imo.

Rockabye Hamlet had 21 previews and 7 performances (28 total) so I highly doubt that Philip Casnoff went on as Hamlet or Laertes.
Then again, High Fidelity only had 18 previews and 14 performances (32 total) and the star has missed 3.5 performances so far.
So I guess by that logic, Philip could have gone on for one of the 28 shows back in 1976. Maybe I will ask him.

Shogun was alledgedly to be an opera according to the composer
I saw it & the production was georgeous. Even with an explanation in the Playbill, it was hard to follow. It was folly to try & compress that big of a book for a musical

"...Shogun was alledgedly to be an opera according to the composer..."
Paul Chihara, the composer, was also quoted in TheatreWeek magazine declaring his score for SHOGUN to be the finest American score since Show Boat.

Posted: 12/15/06 at 12:23amIt's about time! Casnoff is an amazing talent who has quite obviously not had much of a chance to shine on Broadway. Not that he's been hurting for work over the last 20 years.
