Wrong TomMonster. FORUM, COMPANY, A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC and SIDE BY SIDE were all in the black as of their Broadway closings. SWEENEY TODD & INTO THE WOODS moved into the black thanks to tours.

Also, DIRTY ROTTEN SCOUNDRELS was listed by Varaiety as a hit but as of the closing it had not recouped.

The biggest flop to win a Tony award was HALLELUJAH, BABY (196re: Flops nominated for Best Musical which had closed on Jan 13, 1968 - a good 3 months before the Tony Awards were given that year.

Cast albums are NOT "soundtracks."
Live theatre does not use a "soundtrack." If it did, it wouldn't be live theatre!

I host a weekly one-hour radio program featuring cast album selections as well as songs by cabaret, jazz and theatre artists. The program, FRONT ROW CENTRE is heard Sundays 9 to 10 am and also Saturdays from 8 to 9 am (eastern times) on www.proudfm.com

Curtains never re-couped, did it? So, that would consider it a flop.

Even more troubling are the shows that won Best Musical but proved to be financial failures:

HALLELUJAH, BABY! ((as noted it closed BEFORE the awards)
RAISIN
MYSTERY OF EDWIN DROOD
JEROME ROBBINS' BROADWAY
KISS OF THE SPIDER WOMAN
PASSION
SUNSET BLVD. (the biggest flop losing more that $11 million!)
TITANIC
THOROUGHLY MODERN MILLIE

Scarlet Pimpernel wasn't a flop.

SCARLET PIMPERNEL certainly was a flop. I give credit to the producers for trying to make a go of it. It was a fun show with the proper tongue-in-cheek style. But by the time it closed it was deep in the red.

I didn't mention RAGS because it didn't win Best Musical.

Then there are shows which didn't win Best Musical but the exposure on the Tony telecast helped ensure along run (a year or more - profitable or not.) MY ONE AND ONLY; SUNDAY IN THE PARK WITH GEORGE; TAP DANCE KID; INTO THE WOODS; GRAND HOTEL The Musical; FALSETTOS; BLOOD BROTHERS; THE LIFE; THE FULL MONTY; URINETOWN; LIGHT IN THE PIAZZA; DIRTY ROTTEN SCOUNDRELS; and DROWSY CHAPERONE.

Was Starmites a flop?

Starmites was most def. a flop. Wasn't it the "why was this nominated?" show of the season?
