One of my favorite flops is a show that no one ever talks about anymore, it has completely disappeared.
It was written by Michael Rupert, and was called MAIL. It was the story of a guy going through a midlife crisis, and he left his apartment for six months to find himself, and when he came back, all of his mail talked to him.
Michael Rupert not only wrote the score, but starred in it. The delightful Michelle Pawk co-starred, along with Brian Stokes Mitchell (who, interestly enough, actually contributed a song to the score). I adored it, and saw it four times. No one else liked it, however, and it has since disappeared completely, and is never spoken about even by the most knowledgeable of flop collectors. The lack of a cast album is to blame, I suspect, and it's too bad, because the score was chockablock with terrific tunes.
An interesting side note: The reason I saw MAIL four times was because of an odd box office snafu. At the time, Telecharge wasn't a reliable way to get good seats, so one had to line up outside of the box office on the day tickets went on sale to guarantee great seats. It was a cold February morning, and THREE shows had their box offices opening that day: CARRIE, CHESS, and MAIL. I was with a friend, and we wanted to see all three, but couldn't decide what to actually wait out in the cold for. (We arrived, byt he way, at 2:00 a.m., because we thought there would be huge lines for both CARRIE and CHESS. As it turns out, there weren't lines for either, but we didn't know that at the time). We chose to camp out at the Virginia box office for CARRIE, and were the only two people who actually "camped out" for tickets to that show. (We were in the first row center for the first preview, so that gamble paid off).
After we got our CARRIE tickets, we went and got CHESS tickets, and then walked over to the Music Box for MAIL. There was some weird problem with the box office, and so there was a press guy standing out front saying the box office wasn't going to open, but if you brought a pound of junk mail to him that day, you could get a free ticket for the show. I brought four pounds, and got four tickets.

Dance of the Vampires has to be #1. I enjoyed it a whole lot more than any people who got paid to review it and better than many of the non-pro reviewers who spoke so "kindly" of it.

I forgot Martin Guere. that flopped on tour though. never made it to Broadway... I liked it a lot. courtroom drama and burning heretics, c'mon!

Nohas mentioned this one because very few seem to know it floped badly at the Box office on Broadway. My vote goes to SWEENEY TODD. Honorable mention to TABOO.

I too saw Mail, as I am a big Michael Rupert fan. I did forget about it I guess cause it was so long ago. I had the chance to live in New York back then so I saw a lot of flops. Do you remember The Prince of Central Park? I saw Legs Diamond!!! (It was BAD)

I saw LEGS DIAMOND at a preview the day after they fired Bob Stillman because he was too good as Legs' brother and was showing up Peter Allen! The sound operator at the back of the stalls was going crazy trying to follow a cue sheet covered in red pencil alterations. They'd already written out the wonderful Christine Andreas the week before. God it was a mess.

Floyd Collins wasn't a flop. It played its limited engagement off-Broadway at Playwrights Horizons and then when that ended it simply didn't garner enough interest from producers to move to Broadway.
