Follies opens tonight at the Marriott Marquis Theatre! Best of luck to all involved with this stellar production. Hopefully tonight's reviews will reflect the splendor and magic of this wonderful production
"There’s nothing quite like the power and the passion of Broadway music. "
On Friday night, I was flanked in my row by John Simon and Peter Marks. Also recognized: Teachout, Isherwood, Vincentelli, LeSourd, and, I think, David Rooney. I'm sure there were many others.
Damn, I had really hoped that they'd send Brantley back. His original review was mixed-to-Positive, but I feel like if he had returned, he might've raved the second time like with LuPone's Gypsy.
This doesn't necessarily mean Isherwood will be reviewing. I'm sure the Times can get both of their reviewers into a show if they want to see it.
The critics, as a rule, didn't applaud. But from what little I overheard, Teachout will be a rave (but we knew that already from his earlier review), and LeSourd loved Maxwell (but who doesn't?).
As nobodyhome mentioned, Brantley was there on Thursday night. I was right next to him as he entered the theater, and then saw him in deep discussion with a friend/colleague/someone during intermission. Couldn't tell his reaction based upon his expressions.
-There's the muddle in the middle. There's the puddle where the poodle did the piddle."
Reviews will come out probably at the regular time tonight- usually at some point between the curtain going up and coming down at the end. Of course The Times will be the absolute last to post (as always).
