Since I have stated previously that I think Xanadu is overrated...just wanted to share the "other" side of the coin for all those Xanadu fans out there :)

This morning on the Today Show, Kathie Lee talked about how she had first seen Xanadu when it first started, about a year ago. Then, she went on to say that she had just seen it again (there were references to a friend who went with, who went wild about Cheyenne...)and how the show seemed to have gotten better, even than when she saw it originally.
She also mentioned how most actors on the cast were the originals, and that they had their roles down to perfection, after doing it 8 performances a weeek for the last year. And yes, they liked the "roller skating" thing...It was quite the raving "word of mouth" advertising that most shows love (and need).
This comes to show you that, when a show makes it to Broadway, even though we might nitpick it to death here on these boards---the show has to have "something" to it, to make it to the Bway stages ;D

C'est vrai! (It's true). Even though Broadway has seen some pretty bad crap (Glory Days, Lestat, The Look of Love, Lennon, Cry-Baby, The Times They Are-A Changin', High Fidelity, In My Life), these shows are better than some other shows that couldn't make it to Broadway. Before you criticize a show to death, think about all the hard work that went in to making that show, and how every show ever on Broadway, has to be "a little bit good" (I know it's not proper grammar, but it's the only way to express that idea), for it to make it to Broadway. "Xanadu" is a fun show. It's bouncy, but it's pure CAMP! Fun show! Yes! Best Musical Ever! NO!!

Excuse me, musicaltheatrefan3, but have you SEEN all the shows that you listed as "pretty bad crap"???? I know that you are defending those shows, but dont start your defense by labeling it "pretty bad crap"

Dont judge things so harshly until you see it yourself. I saw High Fidelity, and although it wasnt amazing, I wouldnt consider it crap. They obviously did a cast recording because there was something worth while to record (in my opinion) and the set was good enough to win Louizos a Tony nom for it.

Im not sure about the other "pretty bad crap" but im sure they all had their good qualities too.

IMO, I think YOU are pretty bad crap. And I think the rest of this
board agrees with me.

uh oh, i sense a emotional breakdown coming.

Sorry for the bad spelling too ladies and gents.

lightguy...you stated your point so well, until your IMO...:[

Granted, mtf3 had no business referring to the shows listed as "crap"...more respect here :{
But, do we have to get down to the same level with the "replies"...? Let's rise above :I

But... Glory Days/Lestat/The Look of Love/Lennon/Cry-Baby/The Times They Are-A Changin'/High Fidelity/In My Life ARE crap. If anything, musicaltheatrefan didn't go far enough with the description.

Lightguy - I know it's hard but let's just learn to IGNORE the unstable 23 year old (on a personal level). If I can do it, anyone can.

p.s. XANADU is not all just "pure camp", MusicalTheatreFan. granted it's not deep or poetic or intense but there's more to it than "pure camp" . "pure camp" is something like the EVIL DEAD musical that played at New World Stages...

You also have to remember, a show doesn't always close because it is crap. A large chunk of excellent shows and even shows that won many Tony Awards (GREY GARDENS, anyone?!) close simply because they don't find an audience -- you need money to keep a show running and a paying audience provides this. Even plugging a show on TV doesn't produce miracles. Though it is now reaching legendary status, CAROLINE, OR CHANGE suffered this same fate.

Gone are the days of The Ed Sullivan Show and The Rosie O'Donnell Show. Rosie is responsible for giving TITANIC the run it had, even after the critics ripped it apart.
