Thank you for any advice you may have. I've been added as a chaperone to see a 2pm matinee of The Great Gatsby on Thursday, March 13, and I'm pretty sure the organizers booked way too much travel time to make it to the theater with time for lunch.
I'm looking for suggestions of free museums or galleries within walking distance of Times Square. I'll be with a group of a dozen high school students. I'd rather not be roaming all the shops in Times Square for a few hours before. It's just been so long (before COVID) that I've been to the city that I just don't know what is or isn't free and available at this time. My best guess is we're going to have around 2 hours of time to explore and get lunch before going to the theater.

The Library for the Performing Arts at Lincoln Center is a good walking distance from the Broadway Theatre and can have some cool exhibits (though I'm not sure what's playing now). It's not necessarily super engaging, but the lobby area upstairs for Jazz at Lincoln Center also has a kind of timeline of jazz artists and some jazz history.
Though I have to say that 2 hours for lunch with a group of over 10 people does seem to be the right allotment in my mind.

I would not underestimate how long it will take a big group to get lunch. There are not really museums in walking distance of Times Square that I can think of off the top of my head, and museums in NYC typically charge admission. You could walk to the New York Public Library, I see they have an exhibition. Or you could go to Bryant Park.
Just read you are seeing The Great Gatsby. To go to 42nd and 6th might be a stretch.

Lincoln Center is too far to walk IMO given the time constraints.
This is about what I figured. It's probably going to be closer to 3 hours, but we can stick with window shopping as necessary. It's times like this I actually miss that stupidly large Toys R Us. That was always a good time waster with all the giant displays upstairs.
Thank you all for the advice.

The only other thing I just thought of is Rockefeller Center, which is an avenue or two away from the Broadway Theater, though the interesting things like the Observation Deck you have to pay for.

Rockefeller Center is a great suggestion. There are many stores by the area of the skating rink area. There is also the NBC store on 6th, at the front of Rock Center. If they're interested in SNL or any of the NBC tv shows, it's fun to look around. Also Christies Gallery is right by Rockefeller and you can see what exhibit is there. Last time we went, it was free to look around. Here's a link to their website/current collection in NYC: https://www.christies.com/en/calendar?filters=%7Clocation_43%7C
Maybe even a walk through the lobbies of 30 Rock. Some really nice artwork. I walked around the lobby level for about and hour about 10 years ago.
