Posted: 6/15/11 at 1:54pmNEWSDAY, the Long Island daily newspaper features SPIDERMAN on its front page today and reviews the show in its main section. I don't recall them doing that for any other Broadway show.

Posted: 6/15/11 at 8:59pmWell it's hardly a typical Broadway mounting. NBC Nightly News covered the opening (and reviews) this evening too.

Posted: 6/15/11 at 10:02pmHeck, my local RADIO station mentioned in the news broadcast this AM -- it was only one line, but I'm sure they've never mentioned anothere b'way opening.

Posted: 6/15/11 at 10:24pmThe Lion King's opening night (and rave review) was covered on the front page of the NY Daily News when it opened. That's the last time I remember something like that happening.

Posted: 6/15/11 at 10:30pmI recall the NY Times putting MISS SAIGON on the front page (under the fold) 'way back when. However, Newsday is a Long Island paper and the local critic gives little more than plot summaries when he reviews productions out here.

Posted: 6/15/11 at 10:53pmThe Newsday critic is a female, though I agree that her reviews are awful.

Posted: 6/16/11 at 7:35amThe opening of Spiderman was also covered by the news media in Australia. One station opened with "Grover as Spidemonster" and went from there!

Posted: 6/16/11 at 10:26amI don't get the paper everyday, but I do check the online site for the paper daily. They have been following the show like crazy. There are three articles this week that have been headlining the arts page online all week.

Linda Winer is their Main Line theater critic. I don't always agree with her viewpoint but she writes well. The LOCAL critic is Steve Parks, who not only has a terrible speech impediment, but frequently gives nothing more than a plot summary of the shows he's reviewing. If we're lucky, we might get a description of his drive to the theater--anything to fill space.
